Aberdeen stun Hearts with stoppage-time strikes in Scottish opener

Aberdeen’s stoppage-time strikes dismantled Hearts in a dramatic 2-1 Premiership opener at Pittodrie, ending the Jambos’ 14-game winless streak at the ground and prolonging Wouter Vrancken’s early-season misery. Lewis Mayo’s 90th-minute leveller and Kevin Nisbet’s stoppage-time penalty—after Stuart Findlay’s red card—completed a stunning late collapse for Hearts, who had led through Oisin McEntee’s first-half strike. The defeat marked Vrancken’s third consecutive loss since replacing Derek McInnes in June, while Aberdeen’s Stephen Robinson began his campaign with a statement of intent.

A late twist buries Hearts’ fragile summer

Hearts arrived at Pittodrie nursing wounds from a 6-0 Champions League qualifier humiliation by Sturm Graz and a title challenge derailed by contentious refereeing decisions in May. The 1,600 travelling fans made their displeasure heard, chanting against the Scottish FA over perceived injustices in last season’s finale. Yet even amid the unrest, Vrancken’s side looked primed for a rare away win—until the 35th minute, when McEntee’s goal handed them the lead.

Aberdeen, meanwhile, had just welcomed Chris Cadden into the starting XI, the midfielder’s debut coming a day after his £250,000 move from Hibernian. The Dons had already strung together four consecutive Premier Sports Cup victories, but their league opener demanded more. Mayo’s equaliser in the 90th minute shattered Hearts’ composure, and Nisbet’s subsequent penalty—following Findlay’s dismissal for denying a clear chance—sealed a result that felt like a statement of intent for Robinson’s side.

Aberdeen’s resilience and Hearts’ defensive frailties

The visitors’ makeshift defence, shorn of Malachi Fagan-Walcott through injury, struggled to contain Nisbet early, with the striker’s header narrowly missing Connor Ronan’s corner in the 27th minute. Hearts’ lead, though, was built on a shaky foundation: Ba-Sy’s cutback set up Blair Spittal for the opener, but Aberdeen’s equaliser arrived from a set-piece chaos that exposed Hearts’ aerial vulnerability. Mayo’s goal stemmed from a corner routine that Hearts failed to clear, while Nisbet’s decisive penalty followed a defensive miscommunication that allowed the striker to break free.

The red card for Findlay—just the second time in his career—compounded Hearts’ defensive errors, leaving them a man down as the clock ticked into stoppage time. Robinson’s side, meanwhile, had weathered early pressure before growing into the game, their midfield control underpinned by Cadden’s debut contribution. The Dons’ victory was as much about Hearts’ collapse as it was their own resilience, a pattern that will worry Vrancken as the season unfolds.

Tactical shifts and managerial crossroads

Vrancken’s summer has been defined by transition, with five changes from the Sturm Graz defeat—including debuts for Beau Reus and Laurent Mendy—yet Hearts’ shape remained disjointed. The enforced switch of McEntee to centre-half highlighted their defensive shortages, while the midfield lacked the steel to stifle Aberdeen’s late surge. Robinson, by contrast, deployed a pragmatic approach, prioritising compactness in midfield and quick transitions to exploit Hearts’ high line.

The contrast in managerial fortunes is stark: Robinson’s side enters the season with momentum from cup runs, while Vrancken’s first three games have exposed systemic issues. Hearts’ Champions League humiliation was a microcosm of their struggles—defensive lapses, midfield isolation, and a lack of cutting edge. The question now is whether Vrancken can steady the ship before the league’s early-season intensity compounds their problems.

For Aberdeen, the win is a platform to build on, their late drama masking a controlled performance that belied their underdog status. Nisbet’s composure under pressure and Mayo’s composure in front of goal offered a glimpse of what Robinson’s project could become. Hearts, meanwhile, face a daunting run of fixtures with their confidence shattered and their tactics under scrutiny. The season is young, but the early fractures in Edinburgh are already widening.
