Alonso explains shock Fernandez U-turn in new Chelsea transfer twist – London Evening Standard

Xabi Alonso has lifted the lid on the latest twist in Chelsea’s transfer saga, insisting the club’s stance on Enzo Fernández has shifted amid Manchester City’s late interest. The Argentina international remains at Stamford Bridge for now, but the Blues’ position appears to have softened after weeks of firm resistance to any exit. Alonso’s comments come as Chelsea finally secured a competitive victory under his management, a 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Luton Town that offered a rare moment of clarity amid the transfer turbulence.

Why Alonso’s U-turn matters now

Alonso’s admission that Chelsea’s stance on Fernández has evolved comes after weeks of public defiance over the midfielder’s future. The Blues had previously refused to entertain offers for the World Cup winner, but reports now suggest a change in approach, with Manchester City preparing a late bid. Alonso acknowledged the club’s flexibility in recent briefings, noting that discussions were ongoing without specifying terms. This shift coincides with Chelsea’s Carabao Cup progress, a competition that has provided rare respite from their disjointed Premier League campaign.

Their 2-0 victory over Luton, sealed by Danny Welbeck’s 29th-minute strike and an own goal from Hakeem Odoffin in the 45th, was a statement of intent under Alonso’s fledgling regime. The win, Chelsea’s first at Stamford Bridge in competitive football since his arrival, offered a glimpse of progress, even as transfer speculation rages. The result marked Alonso’s first competitive home win as Chelsea manager, a milestone achieved against a Luton side that had conceded just one goal in their previous five matches.

The transfer window’s domino effect

The Fernández saga is just one thread in a wider web of Chelsea’s summer activity. Reports suggest the club are also closing in on a cut-price deal for Jean-Manuel Martinez, with discussions reported to be at an advanced stage. Meanwhile, Arsenal have strengthened their hand with a boost for Gabriel Alvarez, a move that underscores the Premier League’s shifting power dynamics. Chelsea’s transfer business, once a hallmark of their summer, now feels reactive rather than proactive.

Alonso’s Chelsea are still finding their feet, but the Carabao Cup win over Luton provided a rare moment of stability. The Blues’ form under Alonso remains inconsistent, and their league position reflects that uncertainty. Yet, the competition’s early rounds offer a chance to regroup, even as transfer sagas distract from on-field matters. The question now is whether Alonso can use this window to steady the ship, or if the transfer chaos will derail his project before it truly begins.

What comes next for Chelsea and Fernández

With Manchester City circling Fernández, Chelsea’s hand may be forced. The Blues had previously ruled out any sale, but Alonso’s remarks suggest a more pragmatic approach. If City table a bid, Chelsea will face a stark choice: accept a cut-price deal or risk losing the midfielder for nothing next summer. Fernández’s future now hinges on whether Alonso can impose his authority, both on the pitch and in the transfer market.

The Carabao Cup win over Luton was a small step forward, but it’s in the transfer market where Chelsea’s season will be defined. Alonso’s ability to navigate this turbulence will determine whether his project at Stamford Bridge has a future—or if it collapses under the weight of expectation.

Chelsea’s next Carabao Cup tie awaits, but all eyes will remain on the Fernández saga. Alonso’s Chelsea are still searching for their identity, and the next few weeks could shape their season before a ball is kicked in the league. The transfer window, once a source of strength, now threatens to become a distraction.
