Amazon founder Bezos nears deal to buy stake in Liverpool

Jeff Bezos is on the brink of becoming Liverpool’s third billionaire co-owner in a deal that would value the club at £4.4bn and reshape its financial future. A consortium led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is closing in on a roughly one-third stake in Fenway Sports Group’s Anfield outfit, according to Sky News. The syndicate also includes Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder, whose previous attempt to buy Chelsea in 2022 underscores the growing appetite among tech titans for elite football assets. An announcement could arrive this week, though sources caution it may slip into next week.

Why now?

The timing reflects a broader shift in football’s ownership landscape, where deep-pocketed investors treat clubs as financial instruments as much as sporting entities. Bezos’s involvement—despite no prior football links—signals how seriously these figures now view top-tier clubs as vehicles for global influence and brand extension. The valuation, pegged at £4.4bn, would make it one of the sport’s richest-ever deals, eclipsing even recent high-profile investments in Premier League rivals.

FSG, Liverpool’s controlling shareholder since 2010, confirmed last month it had been approached over a “strategic minority investment.” The confirmation followed months of speculation and aligns with a summer of flux at Anfield, where Andoni Iraola’s first pre-season has laid bare the squad’s defensive frailties. Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Monaco in Iraola’s Anfield bow exposed the Reds’ inability to sustain their level, a point the manager himself conceded in blunt terms. With the Premier League opener against Newcastle just two weeks away, the urgency to address those gaps has never been clearer.

What changes next?

The consortium’s arrival coincides with Liverpool’s accelerated transfer activity, with up to five deals potentially finalised this week. Ronald Araujo’s loan from Barcelona—confirmed by Hansi Flick—is the most advanced, while interest in Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye points to a double swoop for defensive and attacking reinforcements. The club’s recruitment drive has already seen Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet arrive, alongside the signing of young centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe, but Iraola has hinted more are needed to compete domestically and in Europe.

Elsewhere, the window’s final stretch is heating up across the league. Arsenal’s pursuit of Barcola, amid interest in Julian Alvarez, contrasts with Tottenham’s defensive crisis, where Cristian Romero’s potential switch to north London has sent shockwaves through the transfer market. Manchester United, meanwhile, remain in the market for a left-back, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall seemingly off the table. These parallel narratives underscore how Liverpool’s incoming investment could tilt the balance in a transfer landscape where financial firepower often dictates outcomes.

The Iraola factor

Iraola’s early tenure has been defined by pragmatism rather than spectacle. His assessment of Liverpool’s squad—delivered after the Monaco defeat—was unsparing, highlighting an inability to maintain performance levels. That honesty, while uncomfortable, frames the club’s immediate priorities: defensive solidity and depth. The Araujo deal, if completed, would address the former, while Barcola’s arrival could inject creativity in midfield, where Iraola’s system demands technical midfielders capable of dictating tempo.

The new ownership group’s arrival would also free FSG to reinvest proceeds into the playing squad, potentially accelerating the club’s transition under Iraola. With the Premier League season opener looming, the next 10 days will determine whether Liverpool can turn financial momentum into on-field progress—or risk repeating last season’s inconsistency.

One thing is certain: Bezos’s consortium isn’t just another takeover rumor. If the deal closes, it will mark the most seismic shift in Liverpool’s ownership since FSG’s arrival in 2010, with ramifications far beyond Anfield. The question now is whether the club can capitalise on the financial windfall before the transfer window slams shut.
