Andoni Iraola offers brutal Liverpool assessment as Reds ‘cannot sustain their level’

Andoni Iraola’s first competitive match in charge of Liverpool ended in defeat—and his post-match assessment was brutally honest. The Reds squandered a two-goal lead for the second time in pre-season, this time against Monaco at Anfield, and the new manager offered no sugar-coating. “We cannot sustain the level we want for all of the game,” Iraola told LFC TV. “As soon as we made some changes, players start to get tired and we cannot sustain that level.”

Another collapse exposes familiar issues

Liverpool’s inability to maintain their performance over 90 minutes has now surfaced twice in pre-season. Against Leeds in the United States, they lost 4-2 after leading twice; at Anfield on Sunday, Monaco erased a two-goal deficit to win 3-2. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz scored before the break, but Paris Brunner’s 82nd-minute winner capped a five-goal thriller. The pattern is clear: Liverpool start strongly, then fade. Iraola’s admission that “they deserved to turn around the game” underscores the scale of the challenge.

This is not just a pre-season blip. The Reds finished fifth last season, a steep drop from their title-winning campaign the year before, and Iraola’s appointment followed Arne Slot’s exit. The new manager’s high-energy system demands intensity and stamina, traits Liverpool have struggled to sustain. The contrast with pre-season wins earlier in July only sharpens the concern: if these are the warning signs, what happens when the fixtures matter? The defensive frailties exposed against Monaco—particularly in transitions—mirrored the issues that contributed to last season’s slide down the table.

Title ambitions hinge on squad overhaul

Liverpool’s transfer activity remains a work in progress, but the urgency is undeniable. Reports indicate Ronald Araujo is set for a season-long loan from Barcelona, a move that would address defensive frailties exposed in both defeats. The club’s recruitment will be scrutinised when the Premier League begins at Newcastle on August 17, especially after Curtis Jones’ absence against Monaco was confirmed as injury-related, not linked to potential moves to Inter Milan as some had speculated. Darwin Núñez’s message to Araujo—”they are special and they’re going to make you feel it that way”—underscored the club’s eagerness to finalise the deal.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s reported interest in Kenan Yildiz adds another layer to the Premier League’s transfer chessboard. The Gunners’ pursuit of Vinícius Júnior collapsed, but their pivot to Yildiz shows how quickly the market can shift. Liverpool, meanwhile, must balance squad overhaul with immediate competitiveness. The Reds’ next fixtures—Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich, and Fulham—offer little respite, and Iraola’s system requires players who can meet its demands. The defensive reinforcements, if completed, could be the difference between mid-table consolidation and a title push.

What comes next for Liverpool

Iraola’s first loss at Anfield is a reality check, but it is also a chance to reset. The manager’s focus on “sustaining the level” suggests tactical tweaks and squad reinforcements are priorities. Isak’s comment that “the spirit is good in the group” offers a sliver of optimism, yet the evidence on the pitch points to deeper work needed. The problem Liverpool must address after Andoni Iraola’s losing Anfield bow draws parallels with Slot’s struggles last term, when fatigue and defensive lapses derailed a title defence.

Liverpool’s new era begins with a Monaco thriller as Munoz debuts at Anfield, but the performance overshadowed the debut. The Reds’ next steps must address their fragility in transition, a theme that has persisted through pre-season. If Araujo’s arrival stabilises the defence, Liverpool may yet turn these defeats into a catalyst for improvement. If not, the title race could slip further out of reach before the campaign even starts.

For now, Iraola’s message is clear: Liverpool cannot afford to keep starting brightly only to collapse. The Premier League does not forgive such lapses, and neither will the fans.
