Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta eyes Barcelona raid as £85m star opens door to transfer

Arsenal’s transfer window is entering its final phase, and Mikel Arteta is making it clear that he intends to add more quality before the squad is finalised. With the Community Shield against Manchester City just days away and the Premier League opener against Coventry City eight days later, the Gunners’ manager is under pressure to strengthen a defence that has already lost William Saliba for an extended period. Arteta’s latest targets—both in England and Spain—reflect a pragmatic approach: secure a reliable centre-back who can also operate at right-back, and explore one last high-value attacking option.

Arteta’s defensive dilemma and the Konsa-Kounde pivot

Arsenal’s interest in Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa has been well-documented, with talks ongoing even as Villa maintain their £60million valuation. The England defender’s ability to play at centre-back or right-back aligns with Arteta’s need for versatility, but the Gunners have yet to meet Villa’s asking price. With time running short, the club is now reportedly considering a cheaper alternative: Barcelona’s Jules Kounde.

Kounde, 27, fits the profile of a defender who can slot into multiple positions. Before joining Barcelona, he played centrally for Sevilla, and his versatility has since been utilised at right-back for both club and country. Spanish outlet Sport suggests that if Kounde signals openness to a move, Arsenal will act quickly. The Gunners’ pursuit of a defensive upgrade is not just about replacing Saliba—it’s about adding depth and competition in a backline that has struggled with injuries and fatigue in recent seasons.

Arteta’s options are narrowing, but the Konsa situation remains fluid. Further talks have taken place, yet Villa’s stance hasn’t softened. If Konsa stays put, Kounde could emerge as the pragmatic choice—a player who has already proven himself in a top European league and won consecutive titles with Barcelona. The French defender’s experience in La Liga’s high-pressing systems would also provide a tactical upgrade over domestic alternatives, particularly in transitional moments where Arsenal have been vulnerable.

Leverkusen’s Boniface: a calculated gamble?

While defensive reinforcements dominate the headlines, Arsenal are also monitoring a potential attacking coup. Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface, a 20-year-old with seven goals and nine assists in 44 Bundesliga appearances last season, has emerged as a player of genuine interest. His Champions League performances against Arsenal in the round of 16—where he troubled the Gunners’ defence in both legs—will not have gone unnoticed in north London. Reports suggest his release clause is set at €100million (approximately £85million), a figure that places him in the same bracket as established Premier League forwards.

Boniface’s profile aligns with Arsenal’s need for a dynamic, penalty-to-box striker who can complement Declan Rice’s progressive carries and Bukayo Saka’s direct running. His ability to operate as a lone striker or in a front two makes him a flexible option, though his limited experience in top-flight European football raises questions about his readiness for the physicality of the Premier League. If Leverkusen were to accept an offer close to his release clause, Arteta would face a high-risk, high-reward decision: gamble on potential or opt for a more established Premier League option.

Martinelli’s future and the Galatasaray factor

Arsenal’s squad planning is not just about incomings—it’s also about managing potential exits. Gabriel Martinelli, a key attacking outlet under Arteta, has attracted interest from Galatasaray, with a reported £38million bid on the table. While the Gunners have not yet responded publicly, the bid’s arrival underscores the need for Arteta to balance ambition with pragmatism.

Martinelli’s form last season—15 goals and 10 assists in all competitions—makes him a valuable asset, but the club’s financial constraints and Arteta’s desire to strengthen other areas may force a decision. If Galatasaray’s offer is deemed acceptable, Arsenal could use the funds to pursue another target, such as Kounde or Boniface. Alternatively, if Martinelli stays, he will be expected to elevate his game further in a title defence that begins with a Community Shield clash against Manchester City. His development under Arteta has been significant, but the squad’s depth means he is no longer irreplaceable in Arteta’s tactical plans.

The Martinelli situation also highlights a broader trend: Arsenal’s squad is deep, but not every player is irreplaceable. Arteta’s ability to navigate these decisions will define whether this window is a success or a missed opportunity. The club’s hierarchy has shown a willingness to back the manager financially this summer, but the final weeks of the window will test their resolve.

What comes next: urgency and realism

Arteta’s admission that there is only a “small pool of available players who can take them to the next level” is a rare moment of candour from a manager in the transfer window. It signals that Arsenal are operating within tight constraints—financial, positional, and time-based. The Community Shield on Sunday is the first real test of the squad’s readiness, but the transfer market’s closing window is the true deadline.

If Konsa remains out of reach, Kounde could be the pragmatic fallback. If Boniface becomes available, he would add a dimension Arsenal currently lack. And if Martinelli departs, his replacement must be identified swiftly. Arteta’s next moves will determine whether Arsenal start the season as title contenders or still have work to do. The window is almost shut, but the Gunners’ manager is not done yet. The question is whether the right pieces can still be assembled in time, or if Arteta will have to make do with the squad he has.
