Balogun walks away from Everton deal – after move scuppered Camara to Chelsea

Everton’s pursuit of Folarin Balogun collapsed in spectacular fashion on Deadline Day after the striker walked away from a £40m move, leaving Monaco and Chelsea fuming just hours after the Blues had seen their own deal for Lamine Camara fall through. The chain reaction began when doubts surfaced over Balogun’s medical, prompting Monaco to prioritise a sale of Camara to Chelsea. When Everton attempted to renegotiate the terms, Monaco withdrew their agreement, leaving the Blues with no replacement for Enzo Fernández, who had already been sold to Manchester City for a British record £125m. By midnight, Balogun’s change of heart scuppered the deal entirely, ensuring a chaotic finale to a summer of record spending.

How the dominoes fell

Everton’s initial agreement with Monaco for Balogun appeared watertight when the striker arrived on Merseyside at lunchtime to complete the £40m transfer. Yet within hours, the medical raised concerns, casting doubt over the deal’s completion. Monaco, sensing an opportunity, pivoted to finalise the sale of Camara to Chelsea, who had endured weeks of rejected bids. The Blues, meanwhile, had already agreed to sell Fernández to Manchester City for £125m, a move that left them exposed if Camara’s deal collapsed.

As the 11pm deadline approached, Monaco withdrew from the Balogun agreement, leaving Everton scrambling to renegotiate. The Toffees even explored a last-ditch loan for Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United, but the window for such a move had already closed. By midnight, Balogun’s decision to walk away—amid the shifting sands of the deal—delivered the final blow, ensuring the saga ended in frustration for all parties involved.

The Chelsea paradox: selling despite the chaos

Chelsea’s decision to sell Fernández to Manchester City, despite the collapse of their Camara pursuit, underscored the club’s willingness to accept financial pragmatism over squad stability. With Camara’s deal in tatters, Chelsea could have withdrawn from the Fernández sale, but instead, they honoured the agreement out of good faith—a move that left them exposed in midfield. The Blues’ record £342m summer spending spree, which included record-breaking outlays across the league, now risks leaving gaps that may prove costly in the coming months.

The broader context of this chaos is a Premier League transfer window where spending reached unprecedented levels. Manchester City’s £440m outlay, Chelsea’s £342m gross spend, and Tottenham’s £300m-plus reconstruction all reflect a league in flux. Even clubs like Liverpool, Brentford, and Brighton broke their transfer records, while Aston Villa and Fulham made blockbuster signings. Yet amid the frenzy, the Balogun and Camara dramas highlighted how quickly plans can unravel when deals hinge on multiple moving parts.

What comes next for Everton and Chelsea

For Everton, the collapse leaves them without a striker and with a transfer window that has delivered little tangible progress. The club’s attempts to reshuffle their squad, including the Zirkzee enquiry, suggest a lack of clarity in their recruitment strategy. With the window now shut, Sean Dyche will have to work with what remains, knowing that Balogun’s exit compounds their attacking limitations.

Chelsea, meanwhile, face a midfield crisis after selling Fernández and failing to secure Camara. The Blues’ reliance on young talent and the remaining squad options will be tested early in the season, particularly as they navigate a congested fixture list. The Fernández sale, while profitable, may yet prove a false economy if the midfield frailties become exposed.

As the dust settles, both clubs must confront the fallout of a Deadline Day that exposed the fragility of even the most meticulously planned transfers. The Balogun saga, in particular, serves as a reminder that in football’s modern transfer market, no deal is truly safe until the ink is dry—and sometimes not even then.
