Brazilian player falls down tunnel during goal celebration

Brazilian defender Jacy Maranhao’s goal celebration against Chapecoense ended in farce rather than triumph when he plunged down a tunnel after vaulting advertising boards at Coritiba’s Couto Pereira Stadium. The 29-year-old’s moment of elation turned to discomfort as he twisted his ankle in the gap behind the barriers, forcing an early substitution in a match that ultimately finished 2-1 to Coritiba.

How the incident unfolded

Jacy rose to head home a corner in the 41st minute, putting Coritiba 1-0 ahead. Instead of a controlled reaction, he sprinted toward the home fans, cleared the hoarding, and disappeared from view down a passageway that leads to the away team’s dressing room. Video footage showed him gingerly climbing out moments later, visibly limping. The VAR intervened shortly afterward and disallowed the goal, but the damage was already done—Jacy was subbed off at half-time and later confirmed an ankle injury.

The tunnel collapse wasn’t unprecedented at Couto Pereira. In 2014, Cameroon striker Joel suffered an identical mishap during a 3-1 win over São Paulo, vaulting the same barriers and tumbling into the passageway. The recurrence raises questions about the stadium’s layout and safety protocols around pitch-side advertising.

What Jacy said after the fall

Speaking after the match, the defender downplayed the incident. “I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine,” he told reporters. He admitted his enthusiasm got the better of him: “Centre-backs hardly ever score goals. So when you do score… I just got carried away.” The VAR’s decision to disallow his goal added a second layer of frustration, though Coritiba’s eventual victory softened the blow.

Why this matters beyond the spectacle

For Coritiba, the episode underscores the risks of unchecked celebrations in stadiums where barriers and tunnels aren’t aligned with modern safety standards. While the club secured three points, the avoidable injury to a starting defender could have broader implications if similar incidents recur. Jacy’s absence, even temporarily, weakens a backline already tasked with navigating a congested Brazilian top-flight schedule.

The incident also spotlights the pressure on VAR to police marginal offside calls and potential fouls, given that a legitimate goal was overturned in the same game. With title races and relegation battles decided by fine margins, such technicalities can eclipse on-field drama.

Coritiba will hope the Couto Pereira tunnel remains a curiosity rather than a recurring hazard. For Jacy, the lesson is clear: celebrate with the fans, but keep both feet on solid ground.
