Carra: Liverpool don’t need Barcola – they need to replace Salah!

Liverpool’s transfer strategy has taken a curious turn this summer. As the club edges closer to a £128.5m bid for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, Jamie Carragher has delivered a blunt assessment: the Reds do not need another left-sided attacker. Instead, they must prioritise replacing Mohamed Salah on the right wing.

Barcola’s arrival would not solve Liverpool’s most pressing problem

Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports News, acknowledged Barcola’s quality but questioned the logic of signing another left winger when Liverpool already boast Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha, and new arrival Victor Munoz in that department. “He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that,” Carragher said. “But he’s a left winger for me.”

The former Liverpool defender argued that the club’s glaring weakness remains the absence of a natural right-sided option to replace Salah. “Liverpool’s big thing that stands out like a sore thumb right now is replacing Mo Salah, a right winger. And I don’t think Liverpool have got anybody really in the squad who looks fully comfortable playing right wing.”

With Barcola’s arrival potentially blocking Ngumoha’s path, Carragher suggested the teenager’s development could be stifled if the club overstocks on left-sided talent. Ngumoha, who turns 18 in August, scored twice in 19 appearances last season and has been earmarked as a future star. Signing Barcola would force Liverpool to either gamble on youth or accept that one of their left-wing options may need to leave.

Salah’s exit has left a void Liverpool cannot ignore

Salah’s departure to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad has exposed a structural imbalance in Liverpool’s squad. While Gakpo and Ngumoha can drift inside from the left, the Reds have lacked a genuine right-sided threat since his exit. Carragher’s warning is clear: addressing this issue should take precedence over adding another left winger.

Reports suggest Liverpool are preparing an opening bid for Barcola, but PSG’s valuation of £128.5m complicates negotiations. The French champions are also closing in on a replacement for Barcola, indicating that Liverpool’s pursuit may hinge on whether they can meet the asking price without derailing their broader squad planning.

Carragher’s stance aligns with the club’s recent transfer activity, which has focused on defensive reinforcements rather than attacking flair. If Liverpool are to bridge the gap to Manchester City and Arsenal, they must address their most critical positional weakness before chasing peripheral upgrades.

Newcastle’s chaos and Arsenal’s Guimarães pursuit add context to Liverpool’s dilemma

The Premier League’s transfer landscape is shifting in ways that could impact Liverpool’s plans. Arsenal’s reported pursuit of Bruno Guimarães has intensified following Eddie Howe’s shock departure from Newcastle, leaving the Magpies in disarray. With Guimarães set to return to pre-season training, Arsenal’s potential bid could further destabilise Newcastle’s squad planning.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s interest in Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall adds another layer of unpredictability. If Newcastle lose key players, their transfer strategy may pivot unexpectedly, potentially freeing up targets Liverpool had not considered. Such volatility makes Liverpool’s own recruitment decisions even more consequential.

The club’s pursuit of Barcola, therefore, must be viewed through the prism of broader Premier League dynamics. While Barcola’s talent is undeniable, Liverpool’s transfer committee must ask whether his arrival would merely paper over a more fundamental issue: the absence of a right winger capable of filling Salah’s boots.

Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has been defined by caution rather than ambition. Signing Barcola would be a statement of intent, but Carragher’s warning is a reminder that intent without precision is meaningless. The Reds must first solve their most pressing problem before chasing solutions that do not exist.
