Championship predictions & best bets: Wolves to fall flat on opening night

With the 2026/27 Sky Bet EFL season now under way, the Championship’s opening weekend arrives with a fixture that carries more than just three points. Wolverhampton Wanderers, freshly relegated from the Premier League, face Blackburn Rovers at Molineux on Friday night in a match that could set the tone for Wolves’ campaign. The betting market has Wolves as second favourites for the title at 5/1, but the numbers suggest caution.

Why Wolves’ opening night is a risk worth taking

Wolves enter the Championship with a tag of second favourites for the title at 5/1 with Sky Bet, but history warns against backing recently relegated sides too early. Research across the last decade shows that teams relegated with 25 points or fewer in the Premier League have won just 15 of their first 50 Championship games—a 30% strike rate. That’s a pattern that doesn’t inspire confidence, especially when the market prices Wolves at 1/2 to avoid defeat against Blackburn.

The opening weekend is often where form is least reliable. Early-season uncertainty can be magnified for clubs adjusting to a lower division, and Wolves’ lack of rhythm could be exposed against Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn. The betting angle here isn’t about Wolves’ long-term potential but their immediate readiness. With so many unknowns still surrounding this Wolves side, the smart play is to respect the volatility of relegation hangovers.

Blackburn’s defensive resilience under Mowbray

Tony Mowbray’s return to Blackburn has been overshadowed by health concerns and uneven results at his past three clubs, but his defensive record remains a constant. Across an 85-game sample, Mowbray’s teams conceded just 1.1 expected goals per 90 minutes—a figure that suggests discipline rather than chaos. That foundation could be enough to frustrate Wolves on their first night back in the second tier.

The betting market reflects this balance, pricing the Under 2.5 goals market at Evens. A low-scoring, tactical opener suits Blackburn’s profile, while Wolves’ lack of cohesion in the early stages of a new campaign could play into their hands. The fixture isn’t just about Blackburn’s resilience; it’s about Wolves’ ability to impose their game when they’re still finding their feet.

Tactical snapshot: Wolves’ transition vs Blackburn’s structure

Wolves’ Championship status means they’ll likely dominate possession, but possession alone won’t win this game. Blackburn’s defensive shape under Mowbray prioritises compactness, and Wolves’ recent Premier League struggles suggest they may lack the cutting edge to break down organised opposition. The visitors’ 1.1 xG conceded per 90 under Mowbray isn’t just a statistic—it’s a blueprint for stifling creativity.

If Wolves are to recover from relegation, they’ll need more than just a strong home record. Friday’s opener is a chance to test their mettle against a side that knows how to frustrate. The tactical battle isn’t just about Wolves’ attack; it’s about whether they can adapt when the opposition refuses to engage.

As the season unfolds, Wolves’ title odds will fluctuate, but the opening weekend is where reputations are tested most sharply. Blackburn, for all their recent managerial turbulence, have a clear identity—one built on defensive solidity. Wolves, meanwhile, carry the weight of expectation despite their relegation status. The smart money isn’t on Wolves dominating; it’s on a tight, tactical contest where the underdog’s discipline prevails.

For those looking to back the first weekend’s trends, the Under 2.5 goals market at Evens offers value. The numbers don’t lie: Wolves’ early-season form is unproven, and Blackburn’s structure could be the spoiler they need. The Championship’s opening night rarely disappoints—and this fixture is no exception.
