Chelsea prepared to sell Fernandez to Man City for right price

Chelsea’s willingness to offload Enzo Fernández to Manchester City for the right price has sharpened the focus on a potential late-window shake-up at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine’s omission from Xabi Alonso’s Carabao Cup squad against Luton on Thursday night underscored the uncertainty surrounding his future, with Chelsea now prepared to cash in if City meet their valuation. The Blues had set an August 14 deadline for a bid, but no offer materialised, leaving the door ajar for a revised approach.

Why Chelsea are ready to sell

Fernández’s exclusion from the Luton tie—despite Alonso describing him as a “good professional” and noting he had been training well—signals a shift in the club’s stance. Chelsea had previously agreed with Fernández’s representatives that he could be sold for £120m by the August 14 deadline, but no bid arrived. Alonso’s post-match comments—”we are prepared for whatever happens with any players who could leave”—hint at a pragmatic acceptance that the midfielder’s future may lie elsewhere.

The timing is critical. Chelsea are also closing in on a £7.5m deal for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, following defensive lapses from Robert Sánchez in Monday’s 3-2 defeat at Fulham. Reinforcing the squad before the window slams shut has become a priority, and Fernández’s potential exit could free up funds for further recruitment. Alonso’s squad management suggests he is already planning for multiple scenarios, with midfield reinforcements like Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton on the radar—though both clubs consider them “unsellable.”

City’s midfield reshuffle fuels interest

Manchester City’s midfield overhaul has intensified their pursuit of Fernández. The departure of Rodri to Barcelona, Nico González to Newcastle (£50m), and Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiah (£51m) has left a void that City are scrambling to fill. Bernardo Silva’s free transfer to Real Madrid and the £116m capture of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest have only partially addressed the issue. The recent £86m signing of Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi—a world-record fee for a teenager—underlines City’s desperation for young, dynamic midfielders.

Fernández’s profile fits City’s needs: a high-energy, press-resistant ball-carrier capable of dictating tempo. His £107m price tag from Benfica last year makes him a significant investment, but City’s financial flexibility and Champions League ambitions may justify the outlay. The absence of a formal bid by August 14 suggests City are still assessing their options, but the interest remains undimmed. Alonso’s squad rotation against Luton—Fernández’s omission came despite training well—may have been a subtle signal to City that Chelsea are open to negotiations.

The ripple effect on Chelsea’s squad

If Fernández departs, Chelsea’s midfield hierarchy could shift dramatically. Conor Gallagher, Moisés Caicedo, and Cole Palmer have all featured prominently, but the loss of Fernández would leave a void in defensive solidity and progressive passing. Alonso’s willingness to gamble on Martínez—despite Sánchez’s errors—indicates a broader strategy: prioritise defensive stability while addressing midfield creativity through recruitment.

The potential arrival of Scott or Wharton, though unlikely given their clubs’ stance, would signal a shift toward younger, lower-cost options. Alternatively, Chelsea could pivot to other targets, such as Roma’s Manu Kone, who is also on City’s radar. The Blues’ squad planning now hinges on whether Fernández’s sale can fund further upgrades—or whether Alonso must adapt to life without him.

Chelsea’s flexibility could prove decisive in the final days of the transfer window. If City return with a bid close to £120m, the Blues may have little choice but to accept, especially with Martínez’s deal nearing completion. Fernández’s future, however, is just one thread in a broader tapestry of squad overhaul. Alonso’s ability to navigate these choppy waters will define Chelsea’s trajectory for the season ahead.
