Chelsea’s Mudryk cleared to play after doping ban resolved

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk will return to competitive action immediately after his doping ban was resolved, ending a 20-month absence from the first team. The Ukrainian international has not played since November 2024, when he was provisionally suspended following an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. His return comes after a landmark agreement between the Football Association, Mudryk, and the World Anti-Doping Agency, which acknowledged that changes to testing standards would have prevented the case from being brought today.

How the ban unfolded and why it collapsed

The saga began in October 2024, when Mudryk returned an out-of-competition test with a low concentration of meldonium while on international duty with Ukraine. Meldonium, a cardiovascular medication, was prohibited by WADA at the time, though its detection thresholds have since been tightened. The FA charged Mudryk in June 2025 and imposed a four-year ban in January 2026, which he immediately appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The breakthrough came when WADA revised its technical documentation on meldonium. While these changes are not retroactive, the FA confirmed that had Mudryk’s sample been analysed under today’s standards, “the concentration of meldonium in the sample would not have been reported and no anti-doping rule violation would have resulted.” With this admission in hand, Mudryk accepted a suspension equal to the time already served and the appeal was withdrawn. The FA, Mudryk, and WADA jointly resolved the proceedings, restoring his eligibility with immediate effect.

Chelsea were also handed a £10m fine and a suspended transfer ban as part of the FA’s broader enforcement action, though the club avoided a points deduction. The Blues have framed the resolution as vindication of scientific progress in anti-doping, stating that “advances in the applicable scientific reporting standards for more reliable testing mean that, had Misha’s sample been analysed under today’s technical requirements, it would not have been reported as a positive test.”

What comes next for Mudryk and Chelsea

Mudryk is expected to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong, marking his first competitive involvement since the ban was imposed. He described the resolution as the “most difficult period” of his career and reiterated his denial of intentional wrongdoing, stating that he has “never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance.” The club has pledged to help him regain full fitness and reintegrate into the squad, with manager Maurizio Sarri likely to assess his condition before deploying him.

His return is a rare piece of good news for a Chelsea side still grappling with the fallout of the Abramovich-era sanctions. The club’s £10m FA fine and suspended transfer ban highlight the ongoing scrutiny over governance, while Mudryk’s rehabilitation offers a chance to rebuild his reputation. His £88m transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 was once seen as a statement of intent under Todd Boehly, but his career has been derailed by off-field issues. A strong pre-season could help silence doubts about his fitness and sharpness.

The wider squad picture remains unsettled. Chelsea have also moved to strengthen their defensive options, with the recent signing of Jean-Clair Lacroix from Crystal Palace adding competition in defence. Mudryk’s return, however, provides a direct route back into first-team plans, particularly if he can rediscover the form that made him a regular under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

Tactical fit and immediate challenges

Mudryk’s primary role is as a direct, high-tempo winger who stretches defences with pace and one-on-one ability. His absence has forced Chelsea to rely on alternatives like Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher, neither of whom replicate his profile. If fit, Mudryk could slot into a front three alongside Palmer and Raheem Sterling, offering a different dynamic to the side’s build-up play.

Sarri’s system demands width and verticality, traits Mudryk possesses in abundance. However, his eight-month layoff means conditioning and match sharpness will be priorities. The club’s medical team will likely manage his return carefully, with pre-season minutes gradually increasing before a potential Premier League debut against Manchester United on 16 August.

The FA’s decision to resolve the case rather than pursue a protracted legal battle underscores the shifting landscape of anti-doping enforcement. For Mudryk, the next chapter begins now—one free of sanctions but defined by the challenge of proving he belongs in the Chelsea team that once paid a world-record fee for his services.

Chelsea’s pre-season tour will be the first real test of whether Mudryk’s ban was the end of a painful chapter or merely a pause in a career still searching for its peak.
