Colombian soccer star puts on the No. 10 in earthquake-destroyed Chocó to bring hope to children – MARCA

In a gesture that transcended sport, a Colombian soccer star stepped into the heart of earthquake-ravaged Chocó this week, wearing the iconic No. 10 shirt to deliver more than just inspiration—it carried a message of resilience to children rebuilding their lives after disaster. The visit, reported by MARCA, saw the player step onto the field in a region still reeling from the tremors that struck on April 11, which left communities fractured and in need of hope.

Why Chocó matters now

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Chocó in mid-April has left scars deeper than the cracks in the earth. Entire neighborhoods in Quibdó and surrounding areas have been displaced, schools closed, and children’s routines shattered. Against this backdrop, the arrival of a star player—known for wearing the No. 10—was more than symbolic. It was a deliberate act of solidarity, aimed at lifting spirits in a place where hope is in short supply. The gesture comes as aid efforts continue to struggle with access and resources, making the timing of the visit particularly significant.

Local leaders have described the emotional impact of seeing a national figure engage directly with affected communities. While no direct quotes from representatives were published, the sentiment was clear: the player’s presence was seen as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, someone is watching, someone cares. The player’s presence, though brief, has already sparked conversations about long-term support, with calls growing for sustained programs that use sport as a tool for healing.

What happens next

While the visit has brought immediate comfort, the challenge now is turning this moment into lasting change. Discussions are underway between local authorities and football federations about setting up youth football clinics in Chocó, using the sport as a way to rebuild confidence and routine. The player’s involvement is expected to catalyze further commitments from clubs and sponsors, though no formal agreements have been announced. Community leaders have emphasized that any initiative must be co-designed with locals to ensure relevance and longevity.

For the children of Chocó, the memory of seeing their hero in the No. 10 shirt may fade, but the idea that someone of such stature chose to stand with them could linger. The next few weeks will reveal whether this act of solidarity translates into tangible support—or remains a fleeting but powerful image.

The power of symbols in crisis

Football has long been a language that cuts across borders, and in Chocó, it became a temporary bridge over the chasm left by the earthquake. The No. 10 shirt, often reserved for a team’s creative heartbeat, carried an unspoken promise: that creativity and hope can emerge even from destruction. While the player’s exact words were not reported, the symbolism of the gesture speaks volumes in a region where words of comfort have been scarce.

This is not the first time football has been used as a tool for social repair, but it is one of the most visible in recent memory. The contrast between the star’s polished boots and the dusty pitches of Chocó underscored the disparity between those who have platforms and those who need them most. Yet, for one afternoon, the divide narrowed—not through charity alone, but through shared passion.

As recovery efforts in Chocó inch forward, the question remains: will this moment be a footnote or a foundation? The player’s visit has given the region a spotlight, but the real work lies in what follows. For now, the children of Chocó have a memory to hold onto—a star in a No. 10 shirt, standing on their soil, if only for a while.
