Count Binface compares Clacton by-election to CARABAO CUP after winning 26 per cent of vote

Count Binface’s 26 per cent vote share in the Clacton by-election was not just a protest against Nigel Farage—it was a political own goal disguised as a campaign stunt. The parody candidate’s performance, against a backdrop of major parties’ boycott, exposed Reform UK’s over-investment in a race that should have been a coronation. Farage’s victory came with 22,239 votes, but the real story was the £250,000 price tag for a contest that even Farage avoided attending, instead hosting a rival “Farage Fest” while Essex Police warned of disruption.

Why the by-election became a Farage sideshow

The Clacton by-election was always a sideshow, but not the one Farage intended. With Labour, the Conservatives, and the Greens all pulling out, the race was reduced to a two-horse contest between Farage and Count Binface—an alien space warrior with a Ceefax fetish. Reform UK poured resources into a campaign that targeted a candidate who had previously managed just 0.2 per cent in Makerfield. Yet Binface still secured 9,455 votes, a figure Farage’s team clearly feared enough to campaign against so aggressively.

Farage’s absence from the results declaration spoke volumes. Instead of facing scrutiny, he held a separate event where he claimed Essex Police had warned of an “organised campaign to disrupt and degrade the result.” The implication—that Binface’s campaign was a coordinated effort rather than a fringe protest—was never substantiated, but it set the tone for a night where Farage’s victory felt more like a technical knockout than a landslide.

Binface’s Carabao Cup analogy and the investigation looming over Farage

Binface’s post-election quip about a “two-legged match, like the Carabao Cup” was a sharp reminder that Farage’s win is not the end of the story. The Reform UK leader now faces an investigation into a £5 million donation received just before the 2024 general election. If found to have breached electoral rules, he could be suspended, triggering another by-election in Clacton. Binface seized on this possibility, telling Sky News: “We’re going to be back in a few weeks, aren’t we? We’ll see what happens then.”

The investigation’s outcome could redefine Farage’s political future, but for now, his focus remains on consolidating Reform UK’s presence in Westminster. His refusal to attend the declaration, coupled with the police warning, suggests a campaign already bracing for further turbulence. Whether the £5 million gift was legitimate or a misstep remains to be seen—but the scrutiny is unlikely to fade.

The cost of a gimmick election

At £250,000, the Clacton by-election was an expensive gamble for Reform UK, one that yielded a victory but no mandate. Farage’s 22,239 votes—50 per cent of the total—were enough to win, but the turnout of 44.4 per cent underscored the hollow nature of the contest. Major parties stayed away, branding it a gimmick, while Binface’s 26 per cent proved that even in a rigged field, protest votes can command attention.

For Farage, the real test will come when Parliament reconvenes. If the investigation finds wrongdoing, Clacton could face another by-election before the year is out. Until then, his “Farage Fest” celebration feels less like a triumph and more like a campaign in permanent overtime. Binface, meanwhile, has already moved on to the next phase—whatever that may be. The only certainty is that Clacton’s political theatre is far from over.
