Cristian Romero faces furious backlash as Tottenham captain ‘wants Arsenal transfer’

Tottenham’s captain wants out this summer, but not to just any club. Cristian Romero has made his preference clear: he is open to a move to Arsenal. The Gunners, long rumoured to be monitoring the Argentina defender, now face an impossible obstacle. According to reports in The Sun, Tottenham will not sell Romero to their north London rivals under any circumstances, and that stance has already triggered a furious backlash from Spurs supporters.

Why Romero’s stance matters now

Romero’s reported openness to an Arsenal move is no secret. The 28-year-old, who became Tottenham captain last season, is prepared to leave White Hart Lane after five years and is receptive to an approach from the Emirates. Arsenal’s interest is well-documented, but Tottenham’s refusal to entertain a direct move between the two clubs changes everything. The north London rivals will not countenance Romero’s transfer to their bitterest enemy, a stance that leaves the defender’s future hanging by a thread.

Tottenham’s leverage is strengthened by Romero’s contract, which still has three years remaining. That gives Spurs the upper hand in negotiations, even if the player is determined to leave. The club’s summer spending spree, which has already seen them invest over £200 million in new talent including Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke, suggests they are preparing for life without Romero. Van Hecke, signed from Brighton for £52 million, is widely seen as a direct replacement, while De Zerbi’s squad overhaul continues apace.

Arsenal’s dilemma and the wider market

Arsenal’s pursuit of Romero is complicated by Tottenham’s refusal to sell to them, but they are not the only club monitoring the defender. Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Barcelona are all interested, with Atletico reportedly ready to table a £40 million bid. The Spanish side attempted to sign Romero last summer, only for former Tottenham boss Thomas Frank to convince the defender to sign a new contract and take the captain’s armband. That move now looks temporary, as Romero seeks a fresh challenge.

For Arsenal, the challenge is twofold. They need defensive cover with William Saliba sidelined through injury, but paying a premium to poach a player from their arch-rivals is a non-starter. The Gunners’ summer has already seen them secure Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million, a deal that underscores their ambition. Yet Romero’s availability does not change the fundamental obstacle: Tottenham will not facilitate a move to Arsenal.

Arsenal’s transfer activity has been relentless this summer, with reports linking them to alternatives such as Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola. Their pursuit of Vinicius Jr ended when Real Madrid extended his contract, forcing Mikel Arteta’s side to refocus. Liverpool, meanwhile, have moved to bolster their defence with Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with an option to buy for £47 million next summer. The Reds’ deal highlights the premium being placed on elite centre-backs in this transfer window.

The historical weight of a north London switch

The last time a Tottenham player moved directly to Arsenal, the move was met with outrage. Sol Campbell’s free transfer to the Gunners in 2001 remains one of the most controversial in Premier League history, a betrayal that Spurs fans have never forgiven. William Gallas followed in 2010, but his move also came when his contract had expired. Romero, still under contract, would be the first player to force through a transfer between the two clubs in 23 years—a move that would inevitably reignite the bitter rivalry.

Tottenham’s refusal to sell to Arsenal is not just about principle. The club’s hierarchy, under new sporting director Luke Browning, has made it clear that Romero will not be allowed to join their rivals. That stance leaves the defender with limited options: force a move to a rival club, accept a diminished role at Tottenham, or attempt to force through a transfer that Spurs will block at every turn. The backlash from Spurs supporters has already begun, with fans taking to social media to vent their anger at the prospect of Romero joining Arsenal.

Romero’s situation encapsulates the tension of this summer’s transfer window. Clubs are spending record sums, but personal rivalries and contractual realities can scupper even the most plausible deals. For Arsenal, the pursuit of Romero is a high-risk gamble that could backfire spectacularly. Tottenham, meanwhile, are preparing for life without their captain, with van Hecke already installed as his successor. The next few weeks will determine whether Romero’s reported dream move becomes a reality—or whether it ends in frustration for all parties.
