Cristian Romero open to joining Arsenal but Tottenham adamant their defender will not cross the north London divide – Paper Talk – Sky Sports

Cristian Romero’s future is the most divisive topic in north London this summer. The Argentine defender, who has captained Tottenham since his £47.5m arrival in 2023, is open to joining Arsenal—but Spurs insist he will not be allowed to cross the divide. The stalemate leaves both clubs in an awkward limbo as the transfer window ticks down.

Where the clubs stand

Tottenham’s position is unambiguous: Romero will not be sold to Arsenal under any circumstances. Multiple Sunday outlets report Spurs’ hierarchy has drawn a red line at a direct move between the two rivals. The Mirror’s transfer centre notes that “Tottenham are adamant their defender will not be crossing the north London divide,” while Sky Sports’ Papers round-up labels the stance “resist.”

For Romero, the desire to move is personal. Reports from Football on Sight suggest the defender has privately indicated he would welcome an Arsenal switch, viewing it as a chance to join a club closer to his preferred project. Yet Spurs’ refusal to entertain such a deal means any resolution will require either a dramatic change of heart in Enfield or an unexpected intervention from the player himself.

Arsenal’s alternative options

Arsenal’s pursuit of Romero appears to have stalled, but Mikel Arteta’s side are already pivoting to Plan B. The Mirror reports that Arsenal are now eyeing Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz after their attempt to sign Vinícius Júnior collapsed. The failure of that bid leaves a gap in Arteta’s attacking plans, and Yildiz’s reported £50m valuation suggests he could be a realistic replacement if negotiations progress.

Elsewhere, the Gunners’ summer has been eventful. The London Evening Standard’s live blog claims Arsenal have “signed” midfielder Claudio Álvarez, though details remain scarce. With the window still open, Arteta may yet pursue further reinforcements—though the Romero saga has consumed enough energy to leave observers wondering what else might emerge before deadline day.

What comes next

The next 48 hours could redefine the north London landscape. Tottenham’s refusal to countenance a Romero-to-Arsenal deal leaves two clear paths: either Spurs find a compromise to keep the defender, or Romero accepts that his time at the club is ending regardless. The Mirror’s reporting suggests the latter is increasingly likely, but Spurs’ intransigence complicates any resolution.

For Arsenal, the focus must shift to alternatives. Yildiz represents one route, but the Gunners’ hierarchy may also explore other avenues—perhaps even revisiting earlier targets now that Romero’s future looks uncertain. The club’s willingness to move on quickly would align with Arteta’s pragmatic approach, yet the emotional weight of a missed Romero deal could linger.

Tottenham, meanwhile, face their own reckoning. Romero’s captaincy and defensive quality have been central to their recent campaigns, and replacing him in the current market will be difficult. If the club stands firm, they risk losing a key asset for nothing—or worse, watching him leave on a free next summer. The board’s resolve will be tested as the window narrows.

One fixture looms large in this saga: the north London derby. Whether Romero starts for Spurs or not, the game will carry extra significance. A strong performance from either side could sway the narrative, while a poor display might accelerate decisions on both sides of the divide. The derby’s outcome won’t resolve the transfer impasse, but it could shape the clubs’ priorities in the final days of the window.

As things stand, Romero’s future remains a question without an answer. Tottenham’s refusal to sell to Arsenal has turned a personal preference into a club-level standoff, and the coming days will determine whether pragmatism or principle prevails. For Arsenal, the challenge is to move forward without Romero—while for Spurs, the risk of inaction grows by the hour.
