Dibling starts for Everton at Preston LIVE!

Everton’s Carabao Cup second-round trip to Preston North End has taken another twist after James Dibling was named in the starting XI for the clash at Deepdale on Wednesday night. The 24-year-old midfielder, who has featured intermittently since his summer arrival from Bournemouth, gets the nod ahead of a host of more experienced options as Frank Lampard’s side look to navigate a congested midfield.

Why this selection matters now

Dibling’s inclusion underscores Lampard’s willingness to gamble on technical midfielders in cup football, where squad rotation and experimentation often take precedence over rigid structure. The England under-21 international has started just twice in Everton’s opening three Premier League games, yet his presence in midfield alongside Nkunku and Onana suggests a shift in approach for a side still searching for rhythm. Preston, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Wolves at the weekend, with Jusuf Erabi a late fitness doubt after picking up a knock.

This tie also carries the weight of history: the first competitive meeting between the clubs dates to 1888-89, a fixture steeped in tradition long before David Moyes’ managerial career began. For Everton, it’s an opportunity to field a largely rotated side and test fringe options in a high-tempo environment, while Preston will view it as a chance to inflict an early upset on a Premier League side still adjusting to life under Lampard.

What to expect from the broadcast and build-up

The match kicks off at 8pm UK time, with Sky Sports providing live coverage across its Main Event and Football channels from 7pm. For viewers in the United States, CBS Sports Network will carry the game, while Paramount+ and FuboTV offer streaming options. Radio listeners can tune into BBC Radio 5 Live for national commentary, ensuring no fan is left without a way to follow the action.

Both managers face fitness headaches. Everton’s Tim Iroegbunam and Christian Nørgaard remain unavailable after their recent league outing, while Preston’s Odel Offiah missed the weekend’s league match. Lampard’s side will be without their usual midfield spine, but the Carabao Cup’s relaxed approach to squad selection could allow Dibling to stake a claim for more regular minutes.

Tactical snapshot: Lampard’s midfield gamble

Lampard’s decision to start Dibling reflects a broader strategy: prioritising control in midfield through technical players who can dictate tempo in tight spaces. Against Preston’s direct style, Dibling’s ability to retain possession under pressure may prove decisive, particularly if Everton’s full-backs push high to compress play. Preston, meanwhile, will likely look to exploit the flanks, where their wingers could target the spaces behind Everton’s advancing full-backs. The visitors’ midfield trio of Dibling, a deeper-lying midfielder, and a box-to-box runner must shield their defence while ensuring quick transitions into attack.

If Dibling can impose his game early, Everton may avoid the sluggish starts that have marred their league form. But Preston’s home record in cup ties—especially against top-flight sides—means Lampard’s side cannot afford to take the hosts lightly. A slip-up here could compound Everton’s early-season struggles, while a comfortable win might accelerate the integration of their new arrivals.

For Preston, a draw or upset would cap a strong week after their league win over Wolves, but their league form remains inconsistent. A heavy defeat could expose their defensive frailties, particularly if Everton’s front three exploit the channels behind their full-backs.

As the clock ticks toward 8pm, the stage is set for a midweek clash that offers more than just a routine second-round tie. For Everton, it’s a chance to reset; for Preston, a platform to announce their Championship credentials. The Carabao Cup’s unpredictable nature means neither side can afford to take the other lightly.

For further context on Everton’s squad evolution this summer, their pre-season draw with Lille provided early glimpses of their tactical flexibility under Lampard. The 1-1 result saw Lampard rotate extensively, a pattern that could repeat itself at Deepdale.

With the Premier League’s congested schedule looming, this tie is a rare opportunity for both sides to experiment. How Lampard’s midfield gamble pays off may well shape Everton’s approach for the weeks ahead.
