Doue silences Madjo-mania as PSG beat Villa to win Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain began their defence of the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in Salzburg, but only after Desire Doué’s 61st-minute strike silenced the teenage sensation Brian Madjo and the clamour of Villa’s first-half fightback. The Ligue 1 champions retained the trophy they lifted in Istanbul a year ago, yet the manner of their win owed more to defensive resilience than the swagger of their pre-season billing.

How PSG survived Villa’s teenage rebellion

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s composed finish after cutting inside Marco Bizot’s near post had given PSG the lead inside 20 minutes, but it was Brian Madjo who seized the spotlight. The 17-year-old, handed his professional debut, became the youngest scorer in Super Cup history when he volleyed Villa level just before the break. His strike—shrugging off Willian Pacho before drilling past Gianluigi Donnarumma—sparked a frenzy around the Red Bull Arena, and his side’s youngsters, including 19-year-old George Hemmings, kept the pressure up after the interval.

Yet PSG’s response was clinical. Doué, who had already seen a goal chalked off for a tight offside before VAR intervened, raced clear to restore the lead. Villa’s immediate reply saw Hemmings denied by a sharp save from Matvey Safonov, but the French champions held firm. Their victory mirrored the 5-4 thriller these sides produced in last season’s Champions League clash, a reminder that Unai Emery’s men remain capable of punching above their weight against Europe’s elite.

Emery’s side show promise, but the window looms

Unai Emery, now four defeats in four Super Cup appearances, conceded nothing in defeat. “We competed very well,” he told TNT Sports. “We had chances to get a result, but football is like this. They are top players, they scored, and they won.” His assessment underlined Villa’s progress under his leadership, even as the absence of key figures like Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez—still recovering from extended post-World Cup breaks—forced youth into the breach.

Emi Buendía, who impressed in midfield, echoed Emery’s pragmatism. “We were there at half-time believing in ourselves,” he said. “In the second half we showed character, but one tricky situation changed the game. We have to learn, but the structure and philosophy the manager wants to keep is here.” With the transfer window still open, Emery’s squad remains a work in progress, and the Super Cup defeat may yet accelerate changes—Liverpool are reportedly set to rival Arsenal for Ezri Konsa, while Villa’s midfield pivot Youri Tielemans has already spoken of United’s interest in his future.

Doué’s moment and PSG’s quiet confidence

For PSG, the win was less about style than substance. Doué’s goal arrived after a VAR review corrected an initial offside flag, a technicality that underscored the fine margins of European nights. Luis Enrique’s side, now back-to-back Super Cup holders, will take the trophy to Paris with little fuss—another trophy added to a cabinet already groaning under the weight of domestic silverware.

The performance, however, offered few clues about their Champions League ambitions. PSG dominated possession but were repeatedly exposed in transition, and Donnarumma’s involvement in Madjo’s equaliser hinted at lingering fragility. Still, the French champions will view Salzburg as a useful reminder: retaining trophies is easier than winning them, and the road to another Champions League final will demand more than just moments of individual brilliance.

For Villa, the night belonged to Madjo, a teenager who announced himself on the biggest stage. But for PSG, the real story was the quiet efficiency of Doué’s intervention—a reminder that in football, the loudest voices are not always the most decisive.
