EFL latest: Man City teenager among seven players on Watford’s centre-back shortlist

Manchester City’s summer spending spree has taken another turn, with the club set to replace Savinho by signing Palmeiras winger Allan Elias for up to £34.2 million. The move comes as City push towards a potential £250 million outlay in this window, following the £100 million capture of Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and the £116 million arrival of Elliot Anderson. With Tottenham poised to land Savinho for a club-record fee, City are already recouping funds while reinforcing their squad ahead of a congested fixture list.

Watford’s centre-back hunt enters decisive phase

Watford have drawn up a shortlist of centre-backs as they seek defensive stability, with Manchester City teenager Rico Lewis among the candidates. The Championship side’s recruitment focus reflects a broader trend across the EFL, where clubs are prioritising defensive upgrades before the transfer window closes. Lewis has featured sporadically for City but could be a long-term option for Watford if a loan or permanent deal materialises. The Hornets’ approach underscores the fluid nature of lower-league transfers, where Premier League clubs often loan young talent to gain experience.

Savinho’s exit clears path for Allan’s arrival

City’s agreement with Palmeiras for Allan follows Savinho’s impending move to Tottenham, where he is set to command a club-record fee. Allan, 22, arrives for an initial £32 million plus £2.2 million in add-ons, with a medical scheduled in the coming days. The Brazilian’s nine goals in 96 appearances for Palmeiras suggest a player comfortable in progressive phases, aligning with City’s preference for versatile forwards. Meanwhile, Tottenham remain in talks to sign Omar Marmoush, which could see them lose two forwards before the deadline. City’s net spend, already approaching £250 million, is being offset by sales including Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, James Trafford, and Nathan Aké.

Maresca’s squad overhaul faces final hurdles

Enzo Maresca’s first summer at City has been defined by bold moves and high-profile departures, yet his project remains a work in progress. The arrival of Allan and Bouaddi, coupled with the potential exits of Savinho and Marmoush, highlights the club’s willingness to reshape the squad despite financial constraints. The situation also reflects broader challenges in Maresca’s tenure, as seen in a disjointed opening-day display that left questions over tactical cohesion. With Nico González’s future uncertain amid Newcastle interest, City’s midfield dynamics could shift further before the window shuts.

City’s transfer activity this week will determine whether Maresca’s vision aligns with the squad at his disposal. The Allan deal, in particular, offers a direct replacement for Savinho’s creativity, though his integration will hinge on pre-season form and Maresca’s system. The club’s financial prudence—balancing outgoings with targeted incomings—suggests a pragmatic approach, even as total spending nears £250 million. For Watford, Lewis’s inclusion in their shortlist is a reminder that City’s academy continues to supply talent to lower-league partners, a model that benefits both parties.

As the deadline looms, City’s focus remains on shoring up their squad while managing expectations. The Allan transfer, finalised within days of Bouaddi’s arrival, signals a clear intent to refresh the attack. Yet the broader narrative of Maresca’s tenure—marked by both ambition and inconsistency—will only crystallise once the window closes and the new signings take the field.
