Elche 0-5 Barcelona | La Liga highlights – Sky Sports

Barcelona dismantled Elche 5-0 in La Liga on Sunday, extending their unbeaten run and underlining their title credentials with a dominant display at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero.

A statement of intent from Xavi’s side

Five goals against a side that had conceded just once in their last five games sent a clear message: Barcelona are serious contenders in the title race. The visitors controlled the game from the opening exchanges, probing with quick passing and pressing high to force mistakes. Elche struggled to contain the Blaugrana’s rhythm, and by the hour mark, the deficit was already insurmountable.

The scoreline reflected the one-way nature of the contest. Barcelona’s attack, led by their front three, repeatedly exposed gaps in Elche’s defensive shape, while their midfield dictated tempo with possession. The win moves Xavi Hernández’s side five points clear of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand, and keeps the pressure on the top two.

What the result means for both teams

For Barcelona, the victory reinforces their status as La Liga’s most consistent side this season. They have now won four of their last five league games, with only a draw against Athletic Club in between. The clean sheet was particularly notable, given Elche’s recent resilience at the back—prior to this match, they had conceded just once in their previous five outings.

Elche, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the table, with just two points from their last six league games. Their defensive frailties were exposed repeatedly, and without a goal in their last four matches, their relegation battle looks increasingly desperate. The defeat leaves them six points adrift of safety with 12 games remaining.

Tactical edge: Barcelona’s midfield mastery

Xavi’s side dominated through midfield control, with their pivot players shielding the defence and allowing the full-backs to push forward. The visitors’ ability to transition quickly from defence to attack stifled Elche’s attempts to build play, while their pressing forced errors in dangerous areas. The midfield trio’s work rate and positional discipline were pivotal in maintaining the high tempo throughout.

Elche, by contrast, lacked cohesion. Their midfield was overrun, and their forwards were isolated against Barcelona’s backline. The home side’s attempts to play out from the back were repeatedly disrupted, and they struggled to create meaningful chances. Barcelona’s intensity left little room for error, and Elche’s lack of composure under pressure was costly.

With Real Madrid still to play their game in hand, Barcelona’s lead at the top is not insurmountable—but for now, Xavi’s men have the momentum. Their next challenge comes against a resurgent Villarreal side, a fixture that could further define their title credentials. Elche, meanwhile, must regroup quickly if they are to avoid an early exit from La Liga’s relegation scrap.
