European football: PSG scramble another draw while Bayern make flying start

European football’s opening weekend delivered contrasting fortunes for the continent’s elite. While Bayern Munich announced their title ambitions with a statement of intent, Paris Saint-Germain scrambled another point in Ligue 1, exposing the fragility beneath their attacking glamour. The contrasting narratives from Friday’s fixtures underscored the gap between the established superpowers and those still finding their footing.

PSG’s late drama masks deeper concerns

Marquinhos’ stoppage-time header rescued a 2-2 draw at Lille, but the manner of the comeback only highlighted PSG’s early-season disarray. Lille took the lead in the 21st minute when Hákon Haraldsson finished coolly after Olivier Giroud’s reverse pass, exposing PSG’s vulnerability to direct counter-attacks. Despite fielding Mbappé, Dembélé and Vitinha, the champions struggled to break down a disciplined Lille side, managing just one shot on target before the 84th minute.

The equaliser arrived in the 90th minute when Vitinha curled a first-time effort into the top corner, but Lille restored their lead seconds later through Dilane Bakwa. Marquinhos’ late header, set up by Vitinha’s cross, salvaged a point, yet the image of PSG’s backline exposed under pressure will linger longer than the relief of the equaliser. Their opening-day stalemate against Rennes now looks less an aberration and more a pattern.

Bayern’s ruthless efficiency sets the tone

Bayern Munich, by contrast, began their title defence with a statement of intent, dismantling Stuttgart 5-1 at the Allianz Arena. The hosts dominated from the outset, with Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlović and Luis Díaz all finding the net in a second-half surge that underlined their relentless attacking threat. Stuttgart’s Josha Vagnoman, who had briefly equalised early in the second half, compounded his night by scoring an own goal, a rare misstep in an otherwise controlled display.

The victory extended Bayern’s unbeaten run to 15 matches and served notice that their record-breaking Bundesliga campaign last term was no fluke. With 122 goals scored in 2023-24, their attacking machinery remains intact, and Friday’s performance suggested they could be just as dominant again. The gulf between Bayern’s clinical execution and PSG’s chaotic late drama framed the Bundesliga as the continent’s most compelling title race before a ball had even been kicked in most other leagues.

Milan’s new striker finds his range

In Serie A, Milan’s €74m signing Gonçalo Ramos marked his debut with a goal, driving in from a tight angle to double their lead against Venezia. The Portugal forward, who joined from PSG in the summer, admitted his contribution was secondary to the win, but his composed finish on 69 minutes provided a glimpse of the attacking potential Milan hope to unlock. A late own goal from Redouane Halhal sealed a 2-0 victory, a result that offered some respite after their opening-day triumph at Torino.

The win was also a poignant one for Milan, whose first home game since Franco Baresi’s passing saw them pay tribute to a club legend. Ramos’ strike, though, was the headline act—a reminder that investment in attack can pay dividends when execution matches ambition.

Tactically, PSG’s struggles against Lille revealed the limitations of their high-pressing approach when faced with organised defensive blocks. Lille’s midfield sat deep, forcing PSG into wide areas and limiting their creative outlets. Bayern, meanwhile, thrived on transitions, with Olise and Díaz exploiting spaces behind Stuttgart’s full-backs. Milan’s performance suggested a more pragmatic approach under Stefano Pioli, prioritising control over spectacle.

As the season unfolds, Bayern’s early dominance sets a benchmark, while PSG’s fragility raises questions about their title credentials. Milan’s new striker has arrived with a statement, but the real test will come against sterner opposition. For now, Europe’s hierarchy looks clearer than it did a week ago—and Bayern are dictating the pace.
