Everton 1-1 Lille | Pre-season highlights – Sky Sports

Everton’s pre-season returned a draw against Lille, a result that offered glimpses of progress under Sean Dyche without masking the work still to be done. The 1-1 stalemate at Goodison Park served as a reminder that Dyche’s side remains a work in progress, even as new faces begin to bed in.

What happened on the pitch

The Toffees opened the scoring through summer arrival Arnaut Danjuma, who converted after a well-worked move in the 34th minute. Lille equalised just before the break, when Jonathan David pounced on a defensive hesitation to restore parity. The second half saw chances on both sides, but neither team could force a winner.

Danjuma’s goal marked his first pre-season strike for Everton, a moment that will have caught the eye of supporters eager for fresh attacking impetus. David’s equaliser underlined Lille’s composure in transition, a trait that could prove instructive for Dyche’s side as they refine their defensive shape. The French side’s equaliser came from a counter-attack that exploited a split-second lapse in Everton’s midfield press, a sequence that highlighted the gaps Dyche’s team must address before the Premier League curtain-raiser.

Why this matters now

For Everton, every pre-season fixture is a chance to assess cohesion ahead of a Premier League campaign where consistency will be decisive. The draw against a side of Lille’s pedigree suggests Dyche’s methods are beginning to take hold, but the narrow margin also highlights the gaps that remain. The defensive organisation shown in patches will provide encouragement, yet the concession of a preventable goal before half-time underscores the fine margins separating Everton from a more convincing display.

Lille, meanwhile, will take confidence from their ability to compete against a Premier League outfit. Their equaliser arrived from a position of control, a sign that their own preparations are gathering pace. For both clubs, the match was less about the result than the details that unfolded within it.

Everton’s summer recruitment has been dissected in detail elsewhere, with questions lingering over whether the additions represent genuine progress or merely a reshuffle of familiar faces. The analysis here suggests Dyche’s signings have brought stability, but not yet the kind of transformative shift that supporters crave. Against Lille, Danjuma’s involvement offered a first glimpse of what that might look like.

What comes next

The next step for Everton is to carry this performance into their remaining fixtures, particularly the clash with Newcastle United, where the intensity will rise further. Dyche will hope to build on the structure shown against Lille, while also addressing the defensive lapses that allowed Lille’s equaliser. The Toffees’ defensive shape, though occasionally sharp, remains vulnerable to quick transitions, a vulnerability that must be ironed out before the Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion.

For Lille, the match served as a useful gauge of their readiness ahead of the new campaign. Their ability to match Everton for large spells suggests they are approaching the season with confidence, even if the draw itself leaves room for improvement.

The tactical picture from Goodison was one of controlled but cautious football. Everton set up in a compact 4-2-3-1 shape, with Abdoulaye Doucouré and James Garner shielding the back four in midfield. Lille’s equaliser exposed a momentary lapse in concentration in the double pivot, where a misplaced pass from Doucouré allowed David to break through and square to the Canadian striker. The incident revealed how Everton’s midfield, despite its industry, can be exposed when their positioning drifts.

As pre-season draws to a close, both clubs will now turn their attention to the challenges ahead. For Everton, the task is to convert these tentative signs of progress into a run of results that can silence the scepticism surrounding their summer rebuild. For Lille, the focus shifts to translating their competitive showing into a strong start to their domestic campaign.

The draw at Goodison Park may not have provided a definitive answer, but it offered enough to suggest that both teams are moving in the right direction—just not quite at the same pace.
