Ex-Newcastle owner Amanda Staveley in talks to buy West Ham stake

Amanda Staveley, the former Newcastle United co-owner, is on the cusp of a return to football ownership after reports emerged that her consortium is close to acquiring a 25% stake in West Ham United. The move comes two years after she and her husband, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, sold their shares in Newcastle, and signals a bold new ambition in English football’s second tier following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship.

A long shadow over Tyneside, a fresh start in east London

Staveley and Ghodoussi’s exit from Newcastle in 2024 marked the end of a turbulent but transformative era at St James’ Park. Their consortium, PCP Capital Partners, now turns its attention to West Ham, where a deal for the 25% stake previously held by the late David Gold is reportedly imminent. The talks have progressed to the point where Vanessa Gold, David’s daughter, is prepared to transfer her shares to Staveley’s group, according to The Times.

What makes this pursuit particularly intriguing is the potential for Staveley’s consortium to escalate its involvement. If successful, the group could table an offer for the shares owned by former chairman David Sullivan, who resigned last month amid serious sexual misconduct allegations exposed by a BBC Panorama investigation. Sullivan has denied the claims and announced legal action against the BBC. A change in control at West Ham would represent a seismic shift in the club’s ownership structure, with Staveley’s consortium backed by investors from the United States and the Far East—some of whom had earlier considered pursuing Tottenham Hotspur.

From the London Stadium to the dugout: a club-wide reset

West Ham’s relegation last season has accelerated the need for a reset, and Staveley’s consortium is positioning itself as the catalyst for that transformation. Beyond the pitch, the group has expressed ambitions to acquire the London Stadium, the club’s contentious home ground. Discussions have already taken place with officials connected to the London mayor’s office, indicating a willingness to tackle one of English football’s most complex venue challenges.

Financially, the consortium’s plans extend to heavy investment in the playing squad, a necessity given the club’s Championship status. West Ham’s recent transfer activity has been dominated by exits, including Jarrod Bowen’s reported move to Tottenham Hotspur, which exposed the harsh realities of a fire sale in the Premier League. Yet Bowen’s decision to remain at the club, as he stated in a recent interview—“I want to bring the club back where it belongs”—offers a rare note of optimism amid the upheaval. The consortium’s arrival could redefine that ambition, with fresh capital aimed at rebuilding both the team and the club’s identity.

The legal and structural hurdles ahead

Even with progress on the Gold stake, Staveley’s consortium faces a critical obstacle: pre-emption rights. Daniel Kretinsky, West Ham’s second-largest shareholder with a 27% stake, holds first option to purchase the shares before any external party. In June, Kretinsky and Vanessa Gold issued a joint statement confirming he had agreed to buy additional shares from Gold, increasing his total to approximately 43%. This complicates Staveley’s path to majority control, though her consortium’s financial backing and strategic vision may yet sway the balance.

The consortium’s broader investment strategy—spanning squad overhaul, stadium acquisition, and commercial growth—reflects a modern approach to football ownership, one that prioritises long-term vision over short-term gains. Yet the Championship’s financial constraints and West Ham’s immediate need for stability present formidable challenges. The club’s recent interest from Ajax and Real Sociedad in midfielder Pablo Álvarez highlights the talent drain and the urgency to act before the window closes.

For Staveley, the move represents more than a return to football—it’s a chance to rebuild a legacy disrupted by Newcastle’s internal turbulence. For West Ham, it could be the lifeline needed to escape the Championship’s gravitational pull and restore the club to its former stature. Whether the consortium can navigate the legal labyrinth and deliver on its promises remains to be seen, but the stakes could not be higher.
