Ezri Konsa transfer: Liverpool set to rival Arsenal for Aston Villa and England defender – Paper Talk | Football News – Sky Sports

Liverpool are preparing to enter the race for Aston Villa and England defender Ezri Konsa, setting up a potential summer showdown with Arsenal for one of the Premier League’s most coveted centre-backs.

Why Konsa’s next club matters now

Konsa, 26, has started all three of England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers this month, including the 2-0 win over Finland on Tuesday. His form has not gone unnoticed, and with Liverpool’s defensive options under scrutiny after a shaky pre-season, the Reds are now weighing up a move for the England international. The pursuit comes as Villa have conceded just once in their last five pre-season fixtures, a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich watched by a global audience, which has only intensified interest in their defensive spine.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have already made a bold statement this summer with the £75 million capture of Bruno Guimarães, a deal that underscores their ambition to challenge for the title. The Gunners’ pursuit of Konsa would signal a further escalation in their defensive recruitment, with the Brazilian midfielder set to partner Declan Rice in a reshaped midfield. Arsenal’s summer spending has already surpassed £100 million with the additions of Christos Tzolis (£34 million) and Illan Meslier (free transfer), demonstrating their intent to bridge the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Villa may now face pressure to cash in on Konsa, whose contract expires in summer 2025. The club’s recent transfer activity, including the departure of three key players this summer, suggests they are preparing for a transitional period under new manager Matthias Jaissle. Konsa’s potential exit would further deplete their defensive ranks, leaving them vulnerable in a congested top-four race.

What comes next in the transfer saga

The next 48 hours could prove decisive. Reports indicate that Liverpool are preparing to table a competitive bid for Konsa, with Jürgen Klopp’s side seeking to address weaknesses exposed in their pre-season campaign. The Reds have conceded 12 goals in their last five pre-season fixtures, exposing vulnerabilities in their defensive structure that Konsa’s ball-playing ability and aerial dominance could address.

Villa’s upcoming clash with Bayern Munich on Saturday, broadcast live in the UK, will provide another stage for Konsa to showcase his abilities. A strong performance could further inflate his price tag, while any defensive lapses might deter potential suitors. The Bavarian giants have been linked with several Premier League defenders, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

For Liverpool, the pursuit of Konsa aligns with their need to strengthen a backline that has struggled with consistency. The Reds have also been linked with Bradley Barcola, whose move to Anfield appears increasingly likely after Lyon accepted a reported £60 million bid. The potential double signing would represent a significant investment in Klopp’s final season, with the German manager under pressure to deliver a stronger defensive foundation.

The wider context: Arsenal’s summer of ambition

Arsenal’s summer has been defined by high-profile arrivals, with Guimarães joining Tzolis and Meslier in a spending spree that has already surpassed £100 million. The club’s subtle but telling gesture of reassigning Louie Copley’s squad number from 39 to 38 has only fuelled speculation about Guimarães’ imminent unveiling. The Brazilian’s preference for 39 stems from his father’s taxi number in Rio, a personal touch that adds a human element to the transaction.

The Gunners’ willingness to break their transfer record for Guimarães—assuming Newcastle’s valuation is met—demonstrates their intent to challenge for the title. Konsa would provide additional defensive cover as Arsenal look to tighten up their backline, which has been a point of concern in recent seasons. The pursuit of the England international would further underline Arsenal’s determination to close the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool.

For Liverpool, the Konsa pursuit is not just about shoring up their defence—it’s a statement of intent. Klopp’s side, fresh off a sixth-place finish last season, cannot afford another campaign of inconsistency. Konsa’s ability to play out from the back and his aerial dominance would address two of their most glaring weaknesses, while his experience at international level would add stability to a defence that has lacked cohesion.

As the transfer window enters its final fortnight, the Konsa saga is poised to dominate the headlines. With Arsenal and Liverpool locked in a high-stakes battle, Villa hold the keys—and the clock is ticking. The outcome of this transfer could shape the Premier League’s title race before a ball is even kicked, with both Liverpool and Arsenal seeking to reinforce their defensive foundations for the challenges ahead.

For now, Konsa remains at Villa, but his future could be decided in the coming days. One thing is certain: the next move will reverberate across the Premier League, with implications for the title race, the top-four battle, and the ambitions of two of England’s most prominent clubs.
