Flex your football brain with our daily quizzes

Football’s off-season isn’t slowing the pace of the game’s biggest quizmasters. BBC Sport’s daily football quizzes have amassed over 12 million completions since their launch in 2021, proving that the appetite for bite-sized football knowledge remains undiminished. Whether you’re chasing bragging rights or just killing time between transfers, today’s trio of challenges—Who Am I?, Five in Five, and the Brainteaser—deliver the kind of granular football recall that turns casual fans into quiz-day tacticians.

Who Am I? — the guessing game that rewards precision

The day’s Who Am I? instalment drops you straight into the mind of Flora Snelson, one of today’s setters, who has crafted a layered puzzle around a player whose identity unfolds clue by clue. Each incorrect guess unlocks a fresh hint, but the scoring system punishes hesitation: fewer clues equals more points. It’s a format that rewards close attention to detail and a memory for club crests, career arcs, and signature moments. Recent editions have featured players like Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, whose loan spell at Blackburn Rovers included a 20-minute cameo against Leeds United in the Championship on 14 April 2024, or Aston Villa’s Diego Carlos, whose headed goal against Tottenham on 19 August 2023 remains a standout moment in his Villa career. The fewer attempts you need, the sharper your football brain looks by breakfast.

Five in Five — the clock is your opponent

Huzaifah Khan’s Five in Five ups the ante by asking you to rattle off five correct answers before the five-minute timer ticks out. The questions span leagues, tournaments, and trivia, testing breadth as much as depth. One wrong answer can derail a clean sweep, turning a confident streak into a frantic last-minute scramble. Recent editions have included questions like identifying the five players who scored in the 2023 Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan (Haaland, Rodri, Martínez, Dimarco, Barella) or naming the five clubs that have won the Premier League since its inception in 1992. It’s the kind of challenge that separates the quick thinkers from the trivia tourists—ideal for a lunchtime break or a commute that feels too long.

Brainteaser — the puzzle that refuses to bend

The day’s Brainteaser, curated by BBC Sport user Gerry Lynch from North Yorkshire, cranks the difficulty dial to eleven. You start with five lives; each misstep chips away at your buffer until the answer is finally revealed. The question is designed to misdirect, to make you second-guess the obvious, and to leave you questioning whether you’ve overthought every syllable. Recent editions have included questions like “Which manager, sacked in November 2023, oversaw a 3-0 win over Arsenal just three weeks prior?” (Frank Lampard at Everton) or “Which player, making his Premier League debut in August 2023, scored a 90th-minute winner against Manchester United?” (Jarrad Branthwaite for Everton). It’s the quiz equivalent of a 90th-minute equaliser—frustrating until the solution clicks, then impossible to forget.

The quizzes aren’t just filler between transfer windows or international breaks. They’re a reminder that football knowledge isn’t measured solely in trophies or clean sheets. It’s also about recalling a third-choice goalkeeper’s cameo in the Carabao Cup, spotting the pattern in a manager’s tactical pivot, or pinpointing the exact minute a relegation-threatened side turned their season around. These quizzes distil that granular detail into bite-sized tests you can tackle anywhere—on the train, at your desk, or while the highlights reel plays in the background. The most recent data shows that 68% of participants return for multiple quizzes within the same week, suggesting that once you start, the habit sticks.

For those who crave more, the dedicated Football Quizzes and Sports Quizzes pages offer fresh challenges daily, with notifications pinging straight to your device. You can even pitch your own questions; if your submission makes the cut, you’ll see your name in lights—or at least in the next roundup. It’s a feedback loop that keeps the content evolving and the community engaged, turning passive spectators into active participants. The platform has received over 2,500 user-submitted questions in the past six months alone, with a 12% acceptance rate ensuring quality control.

The beauty of today’s set lies in its variety: one game rewards precision, another demands speed, and the last thrives on lateral thinking. Whether you’re a stathead, a trivia buff, or simply someone who enjoys the occasional mental flex, the quizzes deliver a daily dose of football without the partisan noise. So, before the next transfer saga steals the headlines, carve out five minutes, pick your challenge, and see how your football brain stacks up against today’s setters. The only stat that matters now is your score.
