Foden’s moment of truth: First season without Guardiola begins

Phil Foden is about to begin his ninth season at Manchester City, but this time without Pep Guardiola at the helm. The 26-year-old forward has spent his entire senior career under Guardiola’s guidance, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a historic Treble in 2022-23. Now, as City transition to a new era under Enzo Maresca, Foden faces a defining moment: can he step out of the Catalan’s shadow and carve his own identity at the Etihad?

The weight of expectation

Foden’s relationship with Guardiola has been symbiotic. The manager shaped him into a versatile attacker capable of playing across the front three, while Foden’s intelligence and technical ability allowed Guardiola to deploy him in almost any role. But with Maresca now in charge, the dynamics have shifted. The Italian’s preferred system—likely a 4-3-3 with wingers stretching play—could demand a different version of Foden, one less reliant on positional fluidity and more focused on direct contribution.

City’s summer signings underscore this transition. Elliot Anderson, the £116m midfielder, arrives with a clear mandate: to replace the creative void left by Kevin De Bruyne. Anderson, who called City “the kings of Manchester,” has already drawn comparisons to De Bruyne’s role, though his own words suggest adaptability rather than imitation. “I’ll play anywhere,” he said. “Creating things, driving forward or the other role if they ask me to do that.” If Maresca leans on Anderson to anchor play, Foden may need to rediscover his goalscoring instincts—a facet of his game that flourished in Guardiola’s later seasons but has been overshadowed by his playmaking.

A contract and a contract dispute

Foden’s future at City remains secure for now, but the club’s transfer activity hints at a broader midfield reshuffle. Jeremy Doku’s new five-year contract, signed this week, signals Maresca’s trust in his wingers to deliver goals and width. Doku, who described Maresca’s style as “very attractive,” believes the manager’s aggressive approach suits his strengths. “He demands a lot of us offensively,” Doku said. “That’s how I like it.” With Rodri’s future still unsettled—City rejected Barcelona’s £55m bid this week—the midfield hierarchy is in flux. If Rodri departs, Foden could be thrust into a more central role, where his ability to dictate tempo and arrive late in the box will be tested.

The club’s pursuit of Enzo Fernández, with Chelsea setting a Friday deadline for a £120m bid, further complicates matters. City’s willingness to sell Rodri or Reijnders suggests they are preparing for life without their Spanish midfield lynchpin. Foden, who has often been deployed as a false nine or second striker under Guardiola, may need to adapt to a more traditional attacking role—one where his finishing, rather than his link-up play, becomes the primary currency.

Tactical pivot: From Guardiola’s protégé to Maresca’s architect

Maresca’s arrival could redefine Foden’s role. The Italian’s time at Chelsea saw him deploy wingers aggressively, with full-backs pushing high to overload flanks. If replicated at City, Foden might find himself drifting inside more often, tasked with exploiting half-spaces rather than drifting between positions. This would require a shift in his movement—less lateral shuffling, more decisive runs into the box. His record under Guardiola shows he thrives in chaos, but Maresca’s structured approach may demand precision over improvisation.

City’s transfer activity also hints at a tactical evolution. The pursuit of Fernández, a deep-lying playmaker, suggests Maresca wants a midfield pivot who can transition defense to attack quickly. If Anderson or another signing fills the De Bruyne-esque role, Foden could be freed to operate as a pure goalscorer—a role he has hinted at embracing. In pre-season, he has already shown a willingness to occupy central areas, a sign that he is preparing for a more defined attacking responsibility.

The moment of truth

Foden’s legacy at City has always been intertwined with Guardiola’s. But now, with a new manager and a squad in flux, the question is whether he can transcend his past. The next 12 months will reveal whether he is a system player or a star in his own right. If he can replicate his best seasons without Guardiola’s guiding hand, he will silence doubts about his ability to lead City’s attack. If not, the whispers about his limitations—his inconsistency in big games, his struggles against low blocks—will grow louder.

City’s transfer business suggests they believe in Foden’s potential. But belief alone won’t win trophies. This season, under Maresca, will determine whether Phil Foden is Manchester City’s future or merely their past.
