Grealish to Everton: City winger’s emotional reunion explained

Jack Grealish’s future at Manchester City is now a matter of personal conviction as much as professional calculation. The 30-year-old winger’s stated preference to return to Everton—where he spent last season before a season-ending foot injury—has emerged as the decisive factor in his potential exit from the Etihad Stadium before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. City’s new manager Enzo Maresca has signalled openness to a departure, but Grealish’s emotional ties to his boyhood club may outweigh financial or sporting considerations in what could be one of the most unusual transfer sagas of the summer.

The pull of Merseyside: why Everton remains Grealish’s first choice

Grealish’s connection to Everton runs deeper than most professional footballers’ links to a club. Born in Solihull but raised in the Liverpool area, he joined Everton’s academy as a 10-year-old and progressed through the youth ranks before making his senior debut in 2014. His loyalty to the club was evident during his single season back at Goodison Park last year, where he scored twice and provided six assists in 20 appearances despite the injury that curtailed his campaign. Everton’s chief executive Angus Kinnear confirmed this week that the club have “remained in contact” with Grealish, a rare continuity in an otherwise turbulent summer on Merseyside.

That continuity matters. While City have yet to receive a concrete offer for Grealish—despite reported interest from Aston Villa—his preference for Everton appears to be the primary obstacle to a move elsewhere. Maresca, who has spoken to Grealish “almost every day,” acknowledged the uncertainty on Thursday, stating: “Until the day he is, it is my duty to try and help him to give us the best. In the next four, five days, we will see what happens.” The timing is critical: Grealish was left out of City’s pre-season squad for reasons that remain unexplained, and his absence from the first two league games suggests his future is already being managed with one eye on an exit.

Everton’s ambition vs. Moyes’ pragmatism: a club divided?

The Friedkin Group’s ownership of Everton has drawn scrutiny for its blunt assessment of last season’s 13th-place finish—a campaign that saw the Toffees miss out on Europe despite briefly occupying a Europa Conference spot. In a rare public statement, chief executive Angus Kinnear declared that the owners viewed the failure to qualify as “a failure,” a comment that jarred with manager David Moyes’ more measured tone. Moyes, who guided Everton to safety in his first season in charge, responded by saying: “I’m surprised they were disappointed because there was never, ever any time anyone said to me ‘David, you have to make Europe.’”

This divergence between ownership and management raises questions about Everton’s direction under the Friedkins, who also own Roma. Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman described the owners’ statement as surprising, noting that the club’s recent history has been defined by survival rather than sustained progress. “I would call it a disappointment rather than a failure,” Osman told BBC Sport, highlighting the gulf between the Friedkins’ win-at-all-costs mentality and the reality of Everton’s post-pandemic constraints. Grealish’s potential return would align with the Friedkins’ push for a statement of intent, but it would also represent a gamble on a player whose injury record and wage demands could complicate their long-term planning.

City’s dilemma: sell now or gamble on a resurgent Grealish

Manchester City’s stance remains fluid, but the club’s willingness to entertain Grealish’s departure suggests they are prepared to accept a financial hit rather than force a player who no longer fits their project. Maresca’s insistence on “helping him to give us the best” implies a professional courtesy rather than an emotional attachment, a far cry from Pep Guardiola’s era where Grealish was a key figure in City’s title-winning side. The winger’s exclusion from the pre-season squad—reported by Football on Sight—hints at a decision already made behind closed doors, even if the club have yet to finalise a deal.

City’s interest in Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye, who has rejected multiple contract offers on Merseyside, adds another layer to the transfer window’s intrigue. Ndiaye’s contract runs until 2029, and Everton are reportedly demanding around £70m to consider a sale—a figure that underscores their reluctance to part with a homegrown talent. Meanwhile, Grealish’s potential move to Villa—his boyhood club—remains a possibility, though no concrete offers have materialised. Maresca’s recent comments about Grealish’s future being “up to him” suggest City are prepared to let the player decide, a rare concession in modern football where clubs often dictate terms.

The tactical reality: can Grealish still deliver at 30?

Grealish’s profile has shifted from a dynamic winger to a player whose fitness and role in City’s system have come under scrutiny. His exclusion from the squad for the Carabao Cup draw—reported in the live blog—further underscores the uncertainty surrounding his status. At 30, Grealish is no longer a young prospect, and City’s tactical evolution under Maresca may not prioritise the kind of direct dribbling that defined his best years. Everton, meanwhile, are rebuilding under Moyes, and Grealish’s return would provide a familiar face to a fanbase still adjusting to life at the new stadium.

Yet the Friedkins’ insistence on winning—exemplified by their Roma project—could clash with Grealish’s injury history and the need for a squad overhaul. Moyes’ pragmatic approach, which prioritised stability over ambition last season, may not align with the owners’ expectations, leaving Grealish’s future hanging in the balance. If he does return to Everton, it will be a move driven by emotion rather than logic, a rare instance in modern football where a player’s heart outweighs his head.

As the deadline looms, one thing is clear: Grealish’s preference for Everton is not just a footnote in this transfer saga—it is the headline. Whether City can reconcile their financial ambitions with his personal wishes remains to be seen, but for now, the pull of Merseyside is proving stronger than the lure of the Etihad.
