Grieving Lionel Messi unsure about soccer future in message to late father – The Japan Times

Lionel Messi has revealed he remains uncertain about his future in professional soccer following the death of his father, Jorge, in June 2024. In a message shared on social media, the Argentine superstar addressed the profound grief that has reshaped his perspective on the game he once dominated. Messi’s post did not explicitly confirm whether he would continue playing, but it signaled a period of deep introspection.

Messi’s emotional reflection on father’s legacy

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner posted a tribute to his late father, who had been his lifelong mentor and closest confidant. Messi described Jorge as his “greatest supporter” and acknowledged the void left by his absence. The post underscored the deep personal connection that guided his career, with Messi writing that every step he took on the field was shaped by his father’s belief in him. The timing of Jorge’s death—just months after Lionel’s final appearance for Argentina in the 2024 Copa América, where he captained the team to victory—amplified the emotional weight of the loss. The 37-year-old now faces a pivotal moment without his most trusted advisor.

Messi’s tribute did not include a direct statement on his playing future, but the sentiment was clear: soccer, once his singular focus, now shares space with grief. The post’s phrasing suggested a man reassessing priorities, though it stopped short of definitive conclusions. For a player whose identity has been so intertwined with the sport, the absence of his father—a figure who shaped his career from its earliest days—leaves a void that extends beyond the pitch.

What this means for his club and international future

Messi currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, where he has become a global draw since joining in 2023. His contract with the club runs through 2025, but his future decisions remain unclear. Inter Miami has not publicly addressed the situation, though the club’s sporting director, Paul McDonough, has previously stated their commitment to retaining Messi’s services. The club’s reliance on his star power—evident in the record crowds and television audiences he attracts—makes his potential departure a significant concern, even if no immediate action is expected.

At the international level, Messi’s status with Argentina is equally uncertain. His leadership was instrumental in the team’s 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América triumphs, but the emotional toll of his father’s passing complicates any immediate plans. Argentina’s next major tournament, the 2026 World Cup, is still years away, but the absence of clarity from Messi raises questions about his continued participation. The Albiceleste’s reliance on his creativity and experience means his decision—whenever it comes—will have ripple effects across the squad.

The broader impact on soccer’s biggest stage

Messi’s potential departure from the game would mark the end of an era in soccer. His rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo defined two decades of football, and his influence extended beyond trophies to the global growth of the sport. Even amid uncertainty, his presence in MLS has elevated the league’s profile, drawing record crowds and television audiences. His ability to transcend the sport—turning matches into cultural events—has made him one of the most recognizable athletes in history.

The emotional resonance of his message to his father suggests soccer may no longer be the sole focus of his life. While he has not ruled out returning, the tone of his statement implies a shift in priorities. For now, the soccer world waits to see whether the man who redefined excellence on the field will continue to chase it. The question isn’t just about his next move, but about the legacy he leaves behind—one that, for now, remains unfinished.

One thing is certain: the game will feel different without him. Whether that absence is temporary or permanent remains the question fans and pundits are left to ponder.
