How Sandro Tonali and Roberto De Zerbi’s mutual friend brokered Spurs move – The Times

Tottenham’s summer spending spree has reached a pivotal moment after Sandro Tonali’s decision to join Spurs was brokered by a mutual friend of both the midfielder and manager Roberto De Zerbi. The £100m signing, who took just 10 minutes to agree terms, marks a bold statement of intent from a club that has already completed six summer deals. With Cristian Romero’s move from Inter still awaiting the player’s final approval, Spurs are on the brink of a seventh addition before the transfer window closes.

The connection that sealed the deal

Tonali’s swift agreement to join Spurs followed a private meeting with De Zerbi, facilitated by a shared acquaintance who knew both men well. According to reports, the Italian international required only a brief conversation with the new manager to be convinced of the project at Tottenham. The mutual friend, whose identity has not been disclosed, acted as an intermediary to bridge the gap between player and club, smoothing over any lingering doubts Tonali may have had about the move.

This behind-the-scenes arrangement underscores how personal networks are increasingly shaping modern transfers, particularly when clubs seek to lure established stars from Serie A. De Zerbi’s ability to close the deal in such short order suggests he has already built trust with his targets, a crucial asset as Spurs aim to compete at the highest level.

Romero’s future still hangs in the balance

While Tonali’s arrival is all but confirmed, Spurs’ pursuit of Inter centre-back Cristian Romero remains incomplete. The clubs reached an agreement for the player’s transfer, but the final piece of the puzzle—the player’s personal approval—has yet to fall into place. Romero’s hesitation leaves Spurs in limbo, though the club’s willingness to pay a reported fee for the Argentine defender indicates their priority remains bolstering the spine of the team.

This dual-track approach—securing Tonali while pursuing Romero—highlights Spurs’ aggressive transfer strategy this summer. The club’s recent activity has already reshaped their squad, with six signings completed and a seventh on the horizon. The challenge now is ensuring these investments translate into on-field progress, particularly after a mixed start to the pre-season campaign.

What comes next for Spurs

Tonali’s arrival provides Spurs with a midfield general capable of dictating tempo, a profile that aligns with De Zerbi’s preferred system. His ability to control games from deep could address a long-standing weakness in Tottenham’s setup, while Romero’s potential arrival would shore up a defence that has struggled with consistency in recent seasons. The club’s recent £85m gamble on Mateus Fernandes remains a risk due to injury concerns, adding another layer of uncertainty to their defensive options.

With the window still open, Spurs have the opportunity to add further depth, though their focus appears to be on finalising Romero’s move. The club’s recent penalty shootout victory over Sydney FC in a pre-season friendly offered a glimpse of progress under De Zerbi, but the real test will come in the Premier League. The manager’s tactical flexibility and the squad’s cohesion will be under scrutiny as Spurs look to justify their summer spending.

Tonali’s decision to join Spurs in such emphatic fashion is a coup for De Zerbi, but the club’s work is far from over. The next few days will determine whether Romero follows, and whether the new signings can deliver the impact Spurs desperately need. For a club that has spent big to compete, the pressure is now on to turn ambition into results.
