Inter land £30m Jones coup as Liverpool lose another academy gem

Liverpool’s academy doors are swinging shut again. Curtis Jones, a 23-year-old midfielder who rose through the ranks at Kirkby, will leave for Inter Milan this week after the Reds accepted a reported £30m bid. The deal caps a summer of exits that has stripped Anfield of two Scouse-born starlets in three years, raising fresh questions about the club’s ability to retain homegrown talent and Inter’s growing appetite for young English players.

Inter’s patient pursuit pays off

Inter’s interest in Jones has been documented for months. A €25m (£21m) bid in June was rebuffed, as were two subsequent offers before the Serie A champions landed on a reported £30m—a figure Liverpool had previously valued at €40m (£34m). The discount reflects Jones’ contract status; his deal expires next summer, and the Reds’ history of waiting until the eleventh hour to agree extensions has cost them dearly in the past. Liverpool twice turned down Inter’s £21m approach before the Italian club upped their offer.

Inter’s recruitment pattern under Simone Inzaghi now includes a clear preference for English midfielders with Premier League pedigree. The club’s pursuit of Jones mirrors their earlier move for Sandro Tonali, who arrived from Newcastle for £55m last summer. The Serie A champions are assembling a squad capable of challenging both domestically and in Europe, and Jones—who starred in Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League win at San Siro in December—fits their profile. His ability to dictate tempo in tight spaces, combined with his direct running from deep, aligns with Inzaghi’s system, which demands midfielders comfortable in both defensive transitions and progressive carries.

Liverpool’s homegrown haemorrhage

Jones’ departure follows Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free transfer to Real Madrid in July, leaving the Reds without a single academy graduate in their first-team squad for the first time in decades. The trend is not new: Liverpool have lost key players on free transfers in recent years, including Ibrahima Konaté, Andy Robertson, and Roberto Firmino, while others—Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and James Milner—have been sold for fees far below their market value. The club’s failure to secure contract extensions for Jones and Alexander-Arnold in their final years under Jürgen Klopp and early under Arne Slot has compounded the issue, with Liverpool’s valuation gaps weakening their bargaining position as clubs like Inter exploit the Reds’ reluctance to meet late-stage demands.

The loss of Jones is more than financial. He is one of the few players from Merseyside to have worn the Liverpool shirt in recent years, a connection that once bridged the gap between club and community. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled by the current crop of academy products, none of whom have established themselves in the first team. Harvey Elliott, the last academy graduate to feature regularly, has been deployed primarily as a winger, while Ben Doak and Stefan Bajčetić remain works in progress.

The tactical ripple effect

Jones’ exit compounds Liverpool’s midfield uncertainty. The Reds have relied on Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to anchor their build-up, but the pair have struggled to impose themselves consistently in high-pressing systems. A public spat between Jones and Szoboszlai during pre-season hinted at deeper tensions, though both players have since downplayed the incident. Still, the loss of a player who could rotate in the No. 8 role—balancing defensive cover with progressive passing—leaves Arne Slot with fewer options ahead of a pivotal Champions League campaign. Jones’ departure also removes a natural counterbalance to Szoboszlai’s direct, vertical style, forcing Slot to reconsider his midfield two’s roles or seek an alternative profile in the market.

Inter, meanwhile, gain a player who has already proven he can deliver in high-pressure European nights. Jones’ performance in Milan last December—when he was Liverpool’s best player in a 2-1 win—demonstrates his ability to rise to the occasion. His arrival gives Inzaghi depth in midfield and a direct replacement for Nicolò Barella, whose future remains unsettled. Jones’ comfort in progressive passing sequences and his willingness to press in wide areas add tactical flexibility, particularly if Barella departs, allowing Inzaghi to deploy a double pivot or a more fluid midfield three.

Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has been defined by exits rather than arrivals. The club’s failure to secure a high-profile replacement for Salah, coupled with the Jones sale, suggests a broader shift in strategy—one that prioritises financial flexibility over squad continuity. Inter, by contrast, are making calculated gambles on young English talent, betting that Jones’ Premier League experience will translate seamlessly into Serie A. For Liverpool, the lesson is clear: when contract negotiations drag into the final months of a player’s deal, the club risks losing leverage. For Inter, Jones is another piece in a squad being built for sustained success. The Reds, meanwhile, are left to wonder how many more academy gems will slip through their fingers before the next homegrown star is ready to take the stage.
