Jamie Vardy could be offered return to English football aged 39 after £15m bid rejected

Jamie Vardy’s exile from English football lasted barely a season. Now, at 39, the former Premier League sharpshooter could be offered a lifeline by West Ham United as they scramble to bolster their Championship squad before the transfer window slams shut. The Hammers’ pursuit of Troy Parrott from AZ Alkmaar has stalled after a £15m bid was rebuffed, leaving manager Nuno Espírito Santo with a clear Plan B: Vardy, a free agent since his Cremonese contract expired in June.

Why West Ham are circling a 39-year-old striker

West Ham’s need for a proven goalscorer is acute. Relegated for the first time in over a decade, they are favourites to bounce straight back under Espírito Santo, who guided Wolves to the Championship title in 2017-18. Yet their attack lacks a reliable finisher. Parrott, the AZ Alkmaar striker linked with a move to London, has 51 goals in two seasons for the Dutch club, but the Hammers’ £15m offer was rejected. With the deal deadlocked, Vardy—whose 145 Premier League strikes rank him 14th on the all-time list—emerges as a pragmatic alternative.

Vardy’s own career arc underscores his value. After 12 years at Leicester, where he won the Premier League, Championship, and Golden Boot, he spent a single season in Italy before returning to England with West Ham’s rivals. His ability to score in high-pressure moments, from Leicester’s 2015-16 title triumph to their 2021-22 Championship win, makes him an enticing short-term solution. Espírito Santo’s side has already added Manor Solomon, a winger signed from Tottenham for around £5m, but a focal point is still missing.

The transfer chessboard: Parrott, Isidor, and the window’s final moves

The Parrott pursuit hit a wall when AZ Alkmaar refused to sell, despite West Ham’s willingness to meet their valuation. The Times reported the bid was rebuffed, leaving the door ajar for Vardy. Another name on the Hammers’ shortlist, Wilson Isidor, is unavailable after Sunderland insisted he would not leave. With time running out, Vardy’s experience—particularly his knack for Championship survival—could tip the scales.

West Ham’s summer activity reflects a clear strategy. Solomon’s arrival from Tottenham, finalised on a three-year deal, adds creativity to a side reshaping for life in the second tier. The Israel international, capped 49 times, arrives with a track record of winning trophies, including the Championship with Leeds in 2024-25. His integration into a squad that has also signed Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid and Netherlands defender Joel Veltman suggests Espírito Santo is building for promotion, not just survival. The Hammers have also moved on several players, including Crysencio Summerville to Al-Hilal and Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham, in a clearout that signals their intent to reshape the squad.

What Vardy brings—and what comes next

Vardy’s appeal lies in his proven adaptability. He scored 20 goals as Leicester won the Championship in 2021-22, proving he could thrive in the physical demands of the second tier. At 39, his fitness and sharpness will be scrutinised, but his mental resilience—honed over 14 Premier League seasons—is undeniable. For West Ham, he offers a ready-made option to replace the goals of a player like Summerville, sold to Al-Hilal after relegation.

The Hammers’ first competitive test of the season arrives on Sunday at Turf Moor against Burnley, another relegated side. A win would send a clear signal of intent, but Espírito Santo’s focus is likely on the transfer market. If AZ Alkmaar maintain their stance on Parrott, Vardy could arrive before the deadline, providing a bridge to a more permanent solution. The club’s financial constraints, highlighted by reports of £19m losses at the London Stadium, make a high-wage deal unlikely, but a short-term contract could be mutually beneficial.

West Ham’s summer has been defined by pragmatism over glamour. Solomon’s arrival was a calculated move, but a striker of Vardy’s pedigree would be a masterstroke. Whether he returns to English football at 39 remains uncertain, but for a club desperate to avoid a prolonged exile from the top flight, his experience could be the difference between a quick recovery and a grinding rebuild.
