Joao Pedro ends Chelsea’s nine curse in 31 seconds

João Pedro’s Chelsea debut arrived with a thunderclap. In the 31st second against Fulham, the Brazilian striker rose above the superstition that has haunted Stamford Bridge for two decades and buried his shot past Bernd Leno. The goal—Chelsea’s fastest of the match—ended the club’s so-called number nine curse in a single strike, a moment that could redefine both his own future and the Blues’ attacking ambitions under Xabi Alonso.

A curse shattered in 31 seconds

The numbers alone tell a story Chelsea supporters have endured since Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink left in 2004. Since then, no striker wearing the number nine shirt has consistently delivered for the club. Romelu Lukaku, Álvaro Morata, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all struggled in the role, their tenures marked by frustration rather than fulfilment. Even Liam Delap, Chelsea’s last number nine before Pedro, managed just one Premier League goal before his loan exit.

Pedro’s strike against Fulham changed that narrative instantly. The Brazilian, now Chelsea’s record signing at £55m plus add-ons, arrived with a reputation earned at Brighton, where he scored 20 goals last season. His contract extension until 2034 and the coveted number nine shirt signalled the club’s faith in him. After the match, he dismissed the curse outright: “I don’t believe in that. I don’t think numbers can decide this pressure.” The performance backed his words, as Pedro combined brilliantly with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in a 3-2 victory that announced Alonso’s era with authority. His link-up play was particularly sharp, with Palmer’s first assist coming from a one-touch layoff in the 12th minute, while Rogers’ late winner was set up by Pedro’s intelligent hold-up play in the 89th minute.

Why this matters beyond the goal

The psychological weight of the curse cannot be overstated. Chelsea’s hierarchy clearly viewed Pedro as the man to end it, tying his long-term future to the club with improved financial terms. His debut strike, though fleeting, carries implications for the season ahead. Alonso’s side, fresh off a Milan double, now has a focal point up front that has been missing since Diego Costa’s departure. Pedro’s ability to link play, press defenders, and finish clinically could restore balance to a Chelsea attack that has often relied too heavily on Palmer’s creativity. The Brazilian’s movement in the box was decisive, with two of his three shots on target in the first half alone, while his pressing intensity forced Leno into two early saves.

Yet the broader context of Chelsea’s transfer activity underscores the stakes. As Delap heads to Forest for £50m, the Blues are reshaping their squad around Pedro’s profile. The club’s willingness to offload underperforming forwards suggests a clear vision: Pedro is the striker they believe can deliver consistency. Whether he can replicate his Brighton form in a more defensive league remains the defining question, but the early signs are encouraging. His first-half goal came from a perfectly timed run between two Fulham defenders, exploiting the space left by the advanced positioning of Antonee Robinson, while his second-half contribution included a crucial interception that led to Palmer’s second assist.

Alonso’s project takes shape

Pedro’s debut was not an isolated triumph. Alonso’s first competitive game in charge saw Chelsea recover from 2-0 down to win, a resilience that hints at the manager’s tactical flexibility. The arrival of Morgan Rogers for a club-record £117m further signals a willingness to invest in attacking talent, but Pedro’s instant impact proves that experience and quality still matter most. His partnership with Palmer, who provided two assists against Fulham, could become the foundation of Chelsea’s season. The pair combined for 12 successful passes in the final third before Pedro’s opener, while their understanding was further evidenced by a quick one-two in the 67th minute that nearly resulted in a second goal.

Beyond the pitch, Pedro’s success could influence Chelsea’s transfer strategy. The club’s reported interest in Real Madrid’s squad, alongside ongoing talks over Enzo Fernández’s future, suggests a squad overhaul is underway. Yet the simplest solution may already be in place. If Pedro can sustain his form, Chelsea may no longer need to chase another marquee striker—a rare luxury in modern football. His ability to drop deep and link midfield to attack, combined with his clinical finishing, provides Alonso with tactical options that were absent last season. The Brazilian’s work rate was particularly notable, with 18 successful pressures in the match and three tackles won in advanced areas.

João Pedro’s 31-second strike was more than a debut goal; it was a statement of intent. By ending Chelsea’s number nine curse, he has given Alonso’s project immediate credibility and the Blues a focal point they have lacked for years. Whether this is the start of a sustained revival remains to be seen, but for now, Pedro has silenced the doubters—one swift strike at a time.
