Late Liverpool pen sees Szoboszlai silence Newcastle in draw

Dominik Szoboszlai’s 99th-minute penalty denied Newcastle a deserved victory at St James’ Park, salvaging a 2-2 draw for Liverpool on Andoni Iraola’s Premier League debut. The visitors had twice led through Cody Gakpo’s strike and Joe Willock’s header, but Szoboszlai’s late spot kick ensured both managers left with a share of the points in a frantic Sunday evening clash.

How Newcastle’s dreamers were left staring at the ceiling

Before kick-off, Newcastle fans unfurled a banner in the Gallowgate End quoting Kevin Keegan: “I want people to dream about their football. We should all be dreamers at heart.” On the pitch, Matthias Jaissle’s side set out to make those dreams tangible, racing into a fifth-minute lead through Anthony Elanga. Will Osula’s pass split Liverpool’s defence, and Elanga rounded Alisson to slot home his first league goal for the club. The Magpies’ intensity unsettled Liverpool early, with Jaissle’s side exploiting gaps in the visitors’ midfield.

Liverpool’s struggles were compounded by Florian Wirtz’s inability to impose any rhythm, while Alexander Isak—returning to St James’ Park for the first time since his Newcastle exit—was met with a chorus of boos and left largely anonymous. Jaissle’s team doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Joe Willock headed in from a corner, a goal that summed up Liverpool’s defensive fragility in transition.

Liverpool’s late leveller exposes early-season nerves

Cody Gakpo’s 55th-minute strike, a low drive past Lukas Hornicek, briefly steadied Liverpool’s ship, but Newcastle nearly restored their two-goal cushion when Lewis Hall’s 96th-minute challenge on Victor Munoz gifted Szoboszlai the chance to equalise from the spot. The Hungarian’s penalty restored parity, ensuring Iraola’s first Premier League match as Liverpool manager ended in frustration rather than elation.

The draw leaves Liverpool without a win in their opening two fixtures, while Newcastle remain unbeaten under Jaissle but will reflect on missed chances. The Magpies’ press forced Liverpool into errors, yet their own defensive lapses—particularly against Gakpo—highlighted the work still required to compete consistently.

Tactical takeaways: pressing, transitions, and the cost of haste

Jaissle’s Newcastle set out to suffocate Liverpool through high pressing, a strategy that paid dividends early but wavered as fatigue set in. Liverpool, meanwhile, struggled to impose their usual possession-based rhythm, with Wirtz’s influence stifled by Newcastle’s aggression. Iraola’s side showed glimpses of control in the second half, but their defensive disorganisation in the buildup to Gakpo’s equaliser underscored the challenges of adapting to life without Arne Slot’s system.

The match also served as a reminder of the psychological edge Newcastle hold at St James’ Park. Isak’s return was overshadowed by Osula’s impact, while the home crowd’s vocal support amplified Jaissle’s players’ intensity. Liverpool, by contrast, will need to tighten their defensive structure if they are to recover from a sluggish start to the campaign.

With the transfer window still open, both clubs face pressing squad questions. Liverpool are pushing for Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola, while Newcastle’s summer activity has yet to address their attacking options beyond Isak. For now, though, the focus remains on the pitch—and Szoboszlai’s dramatic intervention ensured neither side left empty-handed.
