Liverpool finalise Barcola deal, Premier League buildup and more – matchday live

Liverpool have moved a step closer to securing Bradley Barcola’s signature after finalising a deal worth up to £123 million with Paris Saint-Germain, with the 23-year-old winger set to complete a medical on Sunday ahead of his move to Anfield. The agreement, struck on Wednesday night after prolonged negotiations, represents the Reds’ second-biggest outlay in their history and underscores their determination to refresh a squad that finished sixth last season. Liverpool will pay an initial £106 million up front, with the remaining £17 million structured as add-ons tied to Barcola’s individual and team achievements, including appearances, goals and trophies. Personal terms with the France international were agreed last month, clearing the way for the medical and subsequent paperwork.

Barcola deal lands as Liverpool plot summer overhaul

Should the move conclude, Barcola will join Ronald Araújo, Víctor Muñoz and Jérémy Jacquet as Andoni Iraola’s latest arrivals this summer, though the new winger’s profile marks the most eye-catching capture to date. The pursuit of Barcola has dominated Liverpool’s transfer business since the window reopened, with the club opting to prioritise the France international over other targets. His arrival would give the Reds a direct, pacey option on the left flank, a position that has lacked consistent quality since Luis Díaz’s emergence. The deal also arrives amid broader Premier League activity, with Nottingham Forest’s £40 million bid for Everton’s 19-year-old midfielder Harrison Armstrong highlighting the financial pressures facing clubs navigating squad cost ratios. Everton’s need to balance the books could yet force David Moyes to sell, a scenario that would compound the Merseyside club’s summer frustrations.

The sale of Armstrong would be a significant setback for Moyes, who has received limited backing in the transfer market this summer from owners The Friedkin Group. Tensions between the Everton manager and chief executive Angus Kinnear have surfaced in recent weeks, with Moyes disputing Kinnear’s claim that the squad is capable of challenging for Europe this season. The Armstrong saga is a microcosm of the broader challenges facing clubs with limited budgets, where even homegrown talent can become a bargaining chip.

Arsenal chase Alvarez as United’s left-back hunt stalls

Across north London, Arsenal remain locked in talks over Julian Álvarez, with the Gunners preparing to table a £130 million bid for the Atletico Madrid striker. Álvarez’s absence from training this week—cited as illness—has done little to dampen Arsenal’s resolve, though the club’s willingness to meet Atletico’s valuation underscores their desperation for a proven Premier League striker. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s left-back search has hit a snag after Newcastle refused to sell Lewis Hall, prompting the Red Devils to pivot towards Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has also ruled out a move to Old Trafford, opting instead to fight for his place at Camp Nou.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr has also resurfaced, with reports suggesting an agreement in principle over a contract running to 2031. Palace rebuffed Liverpool’s initial £51 million offer, but further bids are expected as the Reds look to bolster their attacking options before the deadline. These parallel moves illustrate how Liverpool’s Barcola deal has reshaped expectations and forced rivals to recalibrate their strategies, with clubs now reassessing valuation benchmarks for attacking talent.

Champions League draw looms as transfer window tightens

With the transfer window edging towards its close, Liverpool’s focus will soon shift to European commitments, where they will face a daunting Champions League draw alongside Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City. The scheduling adds another layer of urgency to Iraola’s squad-building, particularly if Barcola’s integration is to be accelerated. The Reds’ summer has been defined by targeted, high-value signings rather than scattergun spending, a philosophy that now faces its biggest test in the Premier League’s unforgiving opening months.

For Everton, the potential sale of Armstrong would represent a significant setback, depriving Moyes of a young midfielder who has impressed in his early-season appearances. The club’s financial constraints have been laid bare by Moyes’ public disputes with Kinnear, whose claims that the squad can challenge for Europe have been met with scepticism in the dugout. The Armstrong saga underscores the broader challenges facing clubs with limited budgets, where even homegrown talent can become a bargaining chip.

Liverpool’s Barcola deal, while expensive, offers a clear upgrade on the left wing and a statement of intent from a club determined to rediscover their top-four rhythm. As the medical beckons and rivals scramble to react, the coming days will reveal whether Iraola’s vision for the squad can translate into on-field progress—or whether the window’s late flurries will leave more questions than answers.
