Liverpool news: Barcola alternative sends message to Iraola as transfer plan clarified

Liverpool’s transfer window has entered its final fortnight, and with the Premier League opener against Newcastle United just six days away, the Reds’ search for a right-sided winger has taken a new twist. Bradley Barcola remains the club’s headline target, but the emergence of Victor Munoz as a viable alternative has forced Andoni Iraola to reassess his options. The Frenchman’s arrival from Rennes for £60 million in January already signalled Liverpool’s intent to strengthen their attacking ranks, but Munoz’s performances in pre-season have underlined how quickly the landscape can shift.

Barcola’s future hangs in the balance as PSG reshuffle

Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola has been well-documented, but PSG’s recent squad reshuffle has complicated matters. Luis Enrique left both the Frenchman and Ibrahim Mbaye out of his matchday squad for the Trophée des Champions defeat to Lens, a move that speaks volumes about their standing at the Parc des Princes. PSG’s official squad list for the fixture, published on LFP.fr, confirmed Barcola and Mbaye were not included. With Ferran Torres and Mika Godts now added to the forward line, Barcola’s path to regular minutes has narrowed further. Enrique’s terse “Thank you, goodbye” in response to questions about the pair’s futures only added to the sense of urgency in Liverpool’s boardroom. The Reds had been hopeful of a cut-price deal, but PSG’s willingness to bring in replacements suggests Barcola’s valuation of £145 million—reported by Mirror Football—may now be non-negotiable.

Munoz’s pre-season cameo forces Iraola to reconsider

While Barcola’s future remains uncertain, Munoz has already made his case for inclusion in Iraola’s first-choice XI. The World Cup winner, signed from Osasuna for £34.6 million, starred in Liverpool’s closed-doors friendly against Como, tormenting right-back Ivan Smolcic from the left flank before being withdrawn at half-time. His directness and ability to stretch play offered a glimpse of the balance Liverpool have been seeking since Mohamed Salah’s departure to Trabzonspor. The club’s transfer activity this summer has included three senior signings—Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araujo, and Munoz—addressing both defensive and attacking needs. Munoz’s impact suggests Iraola may no longer view Barcola as an indispensable piece of the puzzle, particularly given Rio Ngumoha’s adaptability to play on either flank.

Curtis Jones’ role in flux as Liverpool eye late additions

The uncertainty surrounding the wing positions has also cast a shadow over Curtis Jones’ future. The midfielder, who featured in both of Liverpool’s pre-season fixtures—including the 2-0 win over Como where he provided the assist for Jacquet’s goal—now faces a battle for minutes if Liverpool complete deals for Barcola or Mbaye. Iraola’s preference for a right-winger could see Jones deployed centrally or even shifted to a deeper role, though his creative instincts remain a valuable asset. With the Reds set to kick off their league campaign against Newcastle, the next 10 days will determine whether Liverpool add further firepower or rely on the squad they have assembled.

Liverpool’s transfer strategy this summer has been defined by pragmatism over spectacle. The arrivals of Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo—signed for £60 million and a £47.1 million loan with an obligation to buy, respectively—have addressed defensive needs, while Munoz’s rise offers a tactical alternative to the club’s pursuit of Barcola. The Frenchman’s ability to play on either flank could prove decisive as Iraola finalises his starting XI. Yet the window is not yet closed, and if PSG’s valuation of Barcola remains prohibitive, Liverpool may yet turn to Mbaye or another target to complete their attacking reshuffle.

The Premier League curtain-raiser against Newcastle looms large, but the Reds’ transfer narrative is far from over. Whether Barcola arrives or Munoz cements his place, Iraola’s side must now prepare for life without Mohamed Salah’s goalscoring exploits. The next fortnight will reveal whether Liverpool’s quiet summer has been shrewd or shortsighted—but for now, the focus is on the pitch, not the rumour mill.
