Liverpool transfer news: Reds continue talks with Crystal Palace to sign Ismaila Sarr – Paper Talk – Sky Sports

Liverpool’s transfer strategy is shifting under pressure. With Cody Gakpo’s exit to Manchester City now confirmed, the Reds are accelerating plans to replace him—and Ismaila Sarr has emerged as their primary target. Crystal Palace’s Senegalese winger remains in the club’s crosshairs as negotiations enter a decisive phase, with the window closing in 72 hours.

Why Sarr matters now

Sarr’s inclusion in Liverpool’s plans reflects a broader tactical adjustment. The club have agreed a £100m deal for Bradley Barcola, but sources indicate they still want another winger to balance creativity and directness in attack. Sarr’s profile fits: a player capable of stretching defences with pace and delivering crosses, something Liverpool have lacked since Luis Díaz’s injury. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, are open to offers after a turbulent pre-season that saw them lose key personnel, including a heavy defeat to Manchester City where Phil Foden and Erling Haaland exposed defensive frailties.

The urgency stems from Gakpo’s departure. His move to City, finalised on Sunday, leaves a void in Liverpool’s frontline that Sarr could fill. The Reds’ pursuit isn’t isolated; Nottingham Forest are also in the race for Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr, while Chelsea eye Monaco’s Lamine Camara as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernández if the midfielder joins Manchester City. In this crowded market, Liverpool’s ability to conclude talks with Palace could hinge on their willingness to match Palace’s valuation—a figure reported as non-negotiable by the Eagles’ hierarchy.

What comes next in the window

Liverpool’s next steps are clear. A medical for Barcola is imminent, but the club won’t finalise his deal until Sarr’s situation is resolved. The Reds have already moved on from Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, a decision that now looks prescient given their need for a more established option. Internally, Jurgen Klopp’s staff are prioritising Sarr’s recruitment to avoid a repeat of last season’s winger crisis, when injuries and suspensions exposed the squad’s depth.

For Palace, the calculus is financial. With the Europa League draw looming—where they could face Bournemouth, Sunderland, or Celtic—manager Oliver Glasner needs reinforcements. Sarr’s departure would weaken their attack, but the club’s recent form—a 3-1 loss to Fulham and a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in pre-season—suggests they cannot afford to overplay their hand. The window’s closure on 1 September means both clubs must bridge gaps quickly, with Palace likely to demand a fee in the region of £60m to £70m to sanction a move.

The tactical fit and risks

Sarr’s potential arrival would reshape Liverpool’s front three. His ability to play on either flank allows Klopp to deploy him alongside Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez, with the latter drifting inside to link play. This setup would mirror the system that troubled Manchester City in last season’s Champions League, where Liverpool’s width stretched City’s defence. However, Sarr’s injury record—he missed Senegal’s recent World Cup qualifiers with a hamstring issue—poses a risk. Palace’s medicals will scrutinise his fitness, and Liverpool cannot afford another signing derailed by physical setbacks.

Financially, the move aligns with Liverpool’s post-FSG approach: spending big on premium talent while offloading underperformers. Gakpo’s sale recoups some of the £100m spent on Barcola, but the net spend remains substantial. The club’s commercial team will need to justify the outlay to stakeholders, especially as fan sentiment remains sensitive after last season’s trophyless campaign. A successful Sarr deal, however, could re-energise the squad ahead of a pivotal Europa League campaign, where they will face stiff competition in a group that includes Bournemouth and Sunderland.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Sarr isn’t just about replacing Gakpo—it’s about redefining their attack for the next phase of Klopp’s tenure. The next 48 hours will determine whether they can land their man before Palace’s valuation becomes prohibitive. With every Premier League club scouring the market, the Reds’ ability to act decisively will define their summer legacy.
