Lives scores, updates from Akron men’s soccer vs. Army – Akron Beacon Journal

Akron men’s soccer opened its season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Army on Tuesday night at Lee Jackson Field, overcoming a late surge from the Black Knights to claim the program’s first win of the 2024 campaign. The Zips controlled much of the game, but Army’s resilience nearly turned the tide in the final 15 minutes. The result sets Akron on a path that will test its depth and tactical cohesion early, with a slate that includes road trips to Big Ten and ACC foes in the coming weeks.

Akron grinds out a narrow win after Army’s late surge

The Zips started quickly, with midfielder Tristan Madsen breaking the deadlock in the 22nd minute, slotting home after a well-worked build-up on the left. Army responded with more possession in the middle third, but Akron’s backline, marshaled by center-back Gus Hjulmand, held firm until halftime. The second half saw Akron add a second goal in the 68th minute, when Madsen completed his brace, finishing a through ball from Gavin Vartuli to double the lead. Army pulled one back in the 77th minute through a set-piece header by Ethan Beckford, injecting life into the contest. The Black Knights pressed for an equalizer, testing Akron goalkeeper Josh Lemos with a series of chances, but the Zips’ defense regrouped to preserve the lead. The final whistle confirmed Akron’s 2-1 triumph, a result that will be scrutinized for signs of both promise and areas needing refinement.

What the result reveals about Akron’s early-season shape

Akron’s buildup play relied heavily on overlapping runs from outside backs Jalen Watson and Jared Timmer, who provided width and pinned Army’s wingers back. The midfield trio of Madsen, Vartuli, and Mason Visnovsky controlled tempo, though Army’s pressing in midfield briefly disrupted Akron’s rhythm in the opening 20 minutes. Substitute Dante Sealy added energy off the bench in the second half, testing Army’s right-back with a 1v1 chance that forced a crucial save from the Black Knights’ goalkeeper.

The Zips’ defensive structure shifted between a back four and a back five depending on the phase, with Hjulmand and Evan Buete anchoring the line. Army’s best chance came from a corner routine in the 85th minute that nearly caught Akron out, but the hosts adjusted and cleared the danger. The narrow win underscores the importance of set-piece discipline and second-half transitions, two themes that will likely define Akron’s early-season identity as the team faces stiffer competition in the coming weeks.

Next steps: Road trips and roster adjustments

Akron’s schedule ramps up quickly, with a Thursday night trip to Penn State following this performance. The Nittany Lions boast one of the nation’s stingiest defenses, ranked among the top five in the country for fewest goals conceded per game last season, so the Zips will need to refine their attacking patterns if they hope to leave Happy Valley with points. Coach Ken Lemon will also be monitoring the fitness of several starters who played 90 minutes, including Madsen and Hjulmand, as the squad balances intensity with squad rotation ahead of their next outing.

The win over Army, while not flawless, offers a foundation. The Zips showed they can grind out results when needed, but the real test comes against teams with more technical and physical profiles. How Akron adapts—whether through personnel changes or tactical tweaks—will determine whether this narrow victory is a springboard or a false dawn. The players know the margin for error in the coming weeks is razor-thin, with no room for complacency against teams that will look to exploit any weaknesses in transition.

For now, the focus shifts to State College. The Zips leave Akron with a win, but the work is far from over. The players and staff understand that this performance, while encouraging, is merely the first step in what promises to be a demanding campaign.
