Man City latest: Maresca’s first game ends in penalty shoot-out loss to Inter

Pep Guardiola’s first competitive game in charge of Manchester City ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat to Inter Milan in a pre-season clash at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. Ruben Dias’ side twice came from behind to force extra time, only for Inter to prevail 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. It was a night of missed chances, late drama and a reminder that City’s rebuild under Guardiola’s successor, Enzo Maresca, will demand patience.

City’s resilience tested in pulsating friendly

Inter took the lead through Lautaro Martínez in the 12th minute, a composed finish after a swift counter-attack that exploited a hesitant City press. City equalised through Julián Álvarez in the 35th, slotting home after a goalmouth scramble following a Bernardo Silva cross that evaded three Inter defenders. The visitors regained the lead through a second-half strike from Nicolò Barella in the 58th minute, a driven effort from outside the box after a misplaced pass from Rodri. Bernardo Silva levelled again in the 78th, pouncing on a loose ball in the box to restore parity. The final whistle confirmed a 2-2 draw, setting up a tense shoot-out that saw Inter edge through.

City’s performance offered glimpses of Guardiola’s philosophy under Maresca’s guidance. The hosts dominated possession, registering 62% in the opening 45 minutes, but struggled to break down Inter’s disciplined low block, particularly in the first half when their passing tempo faltered against the visitors’ compact shape. Álvarez’s goal was City’s first clear chance of the evening, while Inter’s clinical finishing—two goals from five shots on target—proved the difference in front of goal.

Maresca’s first test ends in disappointment

For Maresca, the defeat marks a setback in his first competitive outing since replacing Guardiola. The Argentine’s side showed fight but lacked the cutting edge in attack that defined City’s recent dominance. The shoot-out loss, though a pre-season fixture, will sting given the high standards expected at the club, particularly after Inter’s goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, saved from Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne in the shoot-out.

City’s preparation for the new campaign continues to raise questions. Their transfer activity has been overshadowed by uncertainty over key personnel, with reports linking Pedro Neto to a potential move. Meanwhile, rivals Manchester United have impressed in pre-season, with Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho shining in their recent clash against Atlético Madrid. United’s midfield jigsaw appears to be taking shape, a contrast to City’s ongoing tactical adjustments.

What comes next for City?

The result is a minor footnote in the grand scheme, but it underscores the challenges ahead. City’s next steps will hinge on squad clarity, with Maresca tasked with moulding a side capable of competing domestically and in Europe. The Etihad faithful will expect more from a team still finding its identity under new leadership, especially with the Premier League opener against Brighton just over a week away.

As pre-season grinds on, City’s focus must shift to refining their approach. The loss to Inter is a reminder that rebuilding takes time, but the club’s resources and ambition demand swift progress. Maresca’s first real test has passed; the next one will come sooner than expected, with the Community Shield against Manchester United looming as a potential early gauge of his progress.
