Man City latest: Savinho and Reijnders left out of Community Shield squad

Manchester City’s Community Shield preparations have been overshadowed by Enzo Maresca’s latest squad omission, as the new manager left out two unnamed summer signings for Sunday’s clash with Arsenal at Wembley. The decision underscores Maresca’s intent to prioritise continuity and fitness as City target a sustained title challenge, while also signalling the competitive intensity expected from the champions-elect in their season opener.

Why Maresca’s squad choices matter now

The exclusion of two unnamed summer signings from City’s 18-man Community Shield squad is a calculated risk, not a reflection of their ability but of Maresca’s need to manage workloads after a compressed pre-season. Both players arrived with reputations for explosive impact, yet their omission reflects the reality that City’s attacking depth—anchored by Erling Haaland and Julián Álvarez—leaves little room for immediate debuts in a high-stakes fixture. The move also hints at Maresca’s preference for tested options, a theme echoed in his broader squad management this summer, where established names like Rodri and Kyle Walker retained their places despite the arrival of younger talent.

City’s squad selection carries added weight given Arsenal’s own transitional approach. Mikel Arteta’s decision to bench Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Ethan Nwaneri sends a clear signal to fringe players, with the Gunners’ starting XI featuring new signings Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis in key roles. Arteta’s squad, which includes Declan Rice on the bench after late returns from international duty, suggests a blend of experience and fresh faces designed to test City’s readiness for the new campaign. The contrast between the two managers’ approaches—Maresca’s caution versus Arteta’s boldness—sets the tone for a Community Shield that, while officially a friendly, carries the psychological edge of a season’s first statement.

What comes next for City’s summer project

City’s transfer activity this summer has been defined by pragmatism, with Maresca opting to reinforce rather than overhaul. The exclusion of two unnamed summer signings from the Community Shield squad aligns with this strategy, as the club balances the integration of new signings with the need to preserve the fitness of established stars ahead of a congested fixture list. City’s approach contrasts with Arsenal’s more aggressive summer, where Arteta has reshaped his squad with Guimarães and Tzolis while also preparing for potential departures of fringe players like Martinelli and Jesus.

City’s midfield, in particular, remains a focal point. Rodri’s presence in the squad underscores his central role, while the inclusion of summer recruit Manuel Ugarte—though not named in the Community Shield squad—highlights Maresca’s long-term vision for a more physical presence in midfield. The Community Shield itself offers a low-stakes opportunity to evaluate cohesion, but the real test will come in the Premier League, where City’s title defence begins against Brighton on 17 August. Maresca’s squad choices this weekend are a reminder that, for all the summer’s noise, the manager’s primary concern is building a team capable of sustaining a gruelling campaign.

The tactical edge: Maresca vs. Arteta

Maresca’s City lineup is expected to reflect a 4-3-3 structure, with Haaland leading the line and Álvarez providing support in a fluid front three. The manager’s willingness to rotate—evident in the exclusion of two unnamed summer signings—suggests a squad-first mentality, one that prioritises match fitness over individual showcases. This approach mirrors the pragmatism of his predecessor, though Maresca’s tactical flexibility remains unproven at this level.

Arteta, meanwhile, has opted for a more experimental setup, with Guimarães slotting into midfield and Tzolis providing width on the left. The Gunners’ willingness to deploy fringe players like Viktor Gyokeres—who starts on the bench—indicates a squad deep enough to absorb injuries or fatigue early in the season. City’s task is to impose their rhythm, using possession and pressing to disrupt Arsenal’s transitional play. If Maresca’s team can impose their style from the outset, it will send a message to the rest of the Premier League that last season’s champions are not easing into the new campaign.

For City, the Community Shield is a chance to bed in new signings without the pressure of a league debut. The exclusion of two unnamed summer signings is a tactical choice, not a reflection of their potential, and one that underscores Maresca’s methodical approach. As the season looms, the manager’s squad management will be scrutinised closely—especially if City’s title defence stumbles early. For now, though, Maresca’s focus is clear: build, protect, and prepare.
