Man Utd news: £85m transfer touted as long-term target added to wishlist

Manchester United are quietly assembling the foundations for a reshaped squad in 2026/27, with two marquee targets now firmly on Michael Carrick’s radar. The Red Devils have added Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton to their long-term wishlist at a valuation of £85m, while reports from Germany suggest Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae has been placed on a transfer list—both moves underscoring a clear intent to address midfield and defensive fragility before the window closes.

Wharton emerges as Carrick’s midfield priority

United’s summer activity has been modest compared to previous cycles, with only Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow, and Youri Tielemans arriving for a combined £85m. Yet Carrick’s interest in Wharton signals a shift toward youth and domestic development, with the 22-year-old England international now the club’s top midfield target. Palace, however, remain resolute over his future; his contract runs until 2029, and the Eagles have repeatedly rebuffed bids in the £60m–£70m range. The standoff leaves United facing a costly negotiation, but former United midfielder Paul Scholes has publicly endorsed the move, calling Wharton “perfect” for Carrick’s project. “I can’t believe they’re not trying to buy Adam Wharton,” Scholes told The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. “Sandro Tonali would have been my first choice, but with him gone now, Adam Wharton looks perfect to me.”

Defensive crisis forces Carrick’s hand on Kim Min-jae

Injury concerns at centre-back have accelerated United’s pursuit of a new defensive leader. Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martínez remain sidelined, while Harry Maguire’s age and contract status limit his long-term role. Against this backdrop, reports in Germany claim Bayern have placed Kim Min-jae on a transfer list, with United identified as a potential destination. The South Korean’s £85m valuation aligns with United’s spending ceiling, but Bayern’s reluctance to sell star players suggests any deal would require a premium offer. The timing—just days before the deadline—adds pressure, yet Carrick’s need for a reliable centre-back may force a bold move.

United’s defensive turnover has been stark this summer. Radek Vitek left for Middlesbrough for £7m, while Altay Bayindir departed on loan to Celta Vigo, leaving gaps in both depth and experience. A Kim Min-jae signing would not only stabilise the backline but also send a signal to rivals about United’s ambition to compete at the highest level.

Transfer strategy shifts toward sales-driven recruitment

United’s transfer model has come under scrutiny in recent years, with critics pointing to a lack of high-value departures to offset incoming fees. Carrick’s administration is reportedly pivoting toward a sales-first approach to fund ambitious signings, mirroring the strategies of Chelsea and Manchester City. The club’s record in offloading players has “left a lot to be desired,” according to insiders, but a new emphasis on monetising assets could unlock funds for marquee targets like Wharton or Kim Min-jae. The challenge lies in executing those sales before the window shuts—a task that has eluded United in past summers.

Meanwhile, the broader Premier League transfer landscape is in flux. Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has gained momentum after PSG signed Mika Godts, potentially lowering Barcola’s £145m valuation. Arsenal, meanwhile, face a £60m price tag to sign Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, while Tottenham are closing in on Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo for £70m and Manchester City’s Savinho for £85m. The frenetic activity underscores a market where top clubs are willing to pay premiums for elite talent—a reality United must navigate if they are to land their £85m-rated targets.

Tactical fit and the road ahead

Wharton’s profile—box-to-box energy, progressive passing, and defensive awareness—fits Carrick’s preference for midfielders who can dictate tempo and press aggressively. His ability to play as a single pivot or in a double pivot would offer tactical flexibility, particularly if United transition to a more structured system. Kim Min-jae, meanwhile, would provide the defensive solidity and aerial dominance United have lacked since the departure of Raphael Varane. Both players address immediate needs, but their price tags reflect their status as premium assets.

The next 72 hours will be decisive. United’s ability to secure Wharton hinges on outbidding rivals while meeting Palace’s valuation, while a Kim Min-jae deal would require Bayern to prioritise cash over retention. Carrick’s willingness to gamble on both targets suggests a squad overhaul is underway, but the club’s history of missed deadlines and failed negotiations looms large.

One thing is clear: United are no longer content with incremental improvements. The £85m targets on their radar are not just about solving short-term problems—they are about shaping a squad capable of challenging for titles in 2026/27. Whether Carrick can deliver will define his early tenure at Old Trafford.
