Man Utd news: Bruno Fernandes bid incoming as Marcus Rashford to Barcelona still on

Manchester United’s transfer window has entered its final fortnight, and Old Trafford is bracing for two seismic developments that could reshape the squad before the Premier League curtain-raiser at Hull City on Friday, 16 August. Bruno Fernandes’ future remains in flux after Galatasaray tabled a £43m bid, while Marcus Rashford’s stalled Barcelona move has reignited, leaving Erik ten Hag’s rebuild hanging in the balance.

Fernandes’ exit looms as Galatasaray push £43m offer

Galatasaray have tabled a £43m bid for Fernandes, doubling his wages to secure the Portuguese midfielder’s signature. The Turkish giants have long coveted the United captain, but their pursuit has intensified in recent days, with reports suggesting they are prepared to meet United’s valuation. Fernandes, now in the final year of his contract with a 12-month extension option, has been United’s creative fulcrum under Ten Hag, but his long-term future at Old Trafford is now under scrutiny.

The bid’s timing—just days before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday, 1 September—adds urgency to United’s deliberations. The club’s recent signings—Andrey Santos (£50m from Chelsea), Karl Darlow (free), and Youri Tielemans (£35m from Aston Villa)—have bolstered depth, but Fernandes’ departure would force Ten Hag to recalibrate his midfield dynamics. The Telegraph‘s report underscores Galatasaray’s determination, but whether United will accept a deal that falls short of their valuation remains unclear.

Rashford’s Barcelona return still in play

Rashford’s future has lurched between Old Trafford and Camp Nou all summer. After a productive loan spell in La Liga—where he impressed despite Barcelona’s eventual decision not to trigger a £26m permanent option—the winger returned to United, only for Barcelona to re-enter the fray. TEAMtalk reports that Barcelona, despite signing Anthony Gordon (£70m) and Karim Adeyemi, are still assessing options and could yet pursue Rashford again.

The 28-year-old’s form in pre-season—including a goal in United’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan—has kept him in Ten Hag’s plans, but his contract situation complicates matters. With the window tightening, Rashford’s representatives remain in dialogue with Barcelona, leaving United’s attacking options in flux. A second departure in as many weeks would leave Ten Hag scrambling to fill the void.

United’s squad overhaul: progress and gaps

Ten Hag’s summer has been defined by controlled, if not spectacular, recruitment. Three senior arrivals—Santos, Darlow, and Tielemans—have addressed areas of need, but the midfield and attack remain fluid. Tielemans, a £35m signing from Aston Villa, brings Premier League pedigree, while Santos, despite his hefty price tag, offers versatility in midfield.

Yet the uncertainty surrounding Fernandes and Rashford overshadows these additions. United’s pre-season record—two wins, two draws, and two defeats, as confirmed by manager Michael Carrick—has done little to quell concerns about their readiness for the rigours of a 38-game campaign. Their final friendly, a 4-2 loss to AC Milan, exposed defensive frailties that Ten Hag must address before Friday’s trip to Hull.

With the window set to close on 1 September, United face a binary choice: cash in on Fernandes to fund reinforcements, or gamble on retaining their captain and reshaping the squad around him. Rashford’s situation compounds the dilemma—if Barcelona revive their interest, Ten Hag may need to identify a direct replacement.

For now, United’s focus must shift to Hull, where a competitive performance against a Championship side could provide a semblance of stability. But the transfer saga is far from over, and the coming days will determine whether Ten Hag’s project starts with a bang or a whimper.
