Man Utd news: Michael Carrick to get transfer gift as medical booked for double deal

Manchester United are preparing for a frantic final days of the transfer window under Michael Carrick, with two medicals booked as the club pushes to reshape the squad before deadline day on September 1. The Red Devils are involved in multiple deals, including a bid worth up to £65m for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, while a sell-on clause could soften the financial blow of losing Willy Kambwala. Carrick’s activity reflects a reshaping of the squad already underway, with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving this summer.

United’s midfield reshuffle gathers pace

Carrick’s side have submitted a bid worth up to £65m for Carlos Baleba, according to reports, which would make the 22-year-old United’s most expensive signing of the window. The move is part of a broader reshaping of the midfield, following the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans. Baleba’s potential arrival would add a third new midfielder to the squad, signalling Carrick’s intent to address depth and competition in that department. The 22-year-old’s profile—combining technical ability, progressive passing, and high work rate—aligns with United’s need for midfielders who can both control tempo and press aggressively, a balance Carrick has prioritised since taking charge.

Meanwhile, United are set to benefit from a sell-on clause tied to Willy Kambwala’s move to Villarreal in 2024. The 21-year-old defender, who made 10 appearances for United before his departure, is now poised to leave Villarreal for a fee that triggers a small payment back to Old Trafford. Italian club Como are reportedly leading the race for Kambwala, with La Liga side Osasuna also monitoring his situation. The clause reduces the financial hit of his exit, a mechanism Carrick’s team have employed elsewhere this summer—most notably in the deal that brought Tyrell Malacia to the club. Kambwala’s limited minutes last season (23 appearances across all competitions) underscore why United are willing to accept a modest return, but the clause ensures a marginal gain rather than a pure loss.

Academy prospects face exits as deadline looms

United are set to lose two academy prospects to Arsenal, with the Gunners leading the race for the players. The departures highlight the challenges Carrick faces in retaining talent while overhauling the first team. The club’s focus remains on strengthening the senior squad, but the exits underscore the competitive nature of youth development in English football. While the identities of the players involved have not been disclosed, their potential departures reflect the broader trend of Premier League clubs prioritising first-team readiness over academy retention—a reality Carrick has had to navigate since his appointment.

Carrick’s activity comes as United push to finalise deals before the September 1 deadline. The club’s approach contrasts with past summers, where protracted pursuit of targets like Frenkie de Jong yielded little. This window has seen faster, more decisive business, with Baleba’s potential arrival emblematic of a more pragmatic strategy. The medicals booked for Baleba and another undisclosed signing indicate Carrick’s willingness to expedite deals when targets align with the club’s long-term vision.

Tactical shift under Carrick

The midfield reshuffle suggests Carrick is prioritising balance and competition. Santos, a creative presence with an eye for the final ball, complements Tielemans’ experience and Baleba’s athleticism and pressing intensity. The trio would provide Carrick with multiple options to rotate based on opposition, formation, and match state—whether deploying a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1 or a single destroyer in a 3-5-2. The sell-on clause for Kambwala further illustrates a shrewd approach to managing finances amid ambitious recruitment, ensuring that even departures contribute marginally to the club’s transfer budget.

With medicals booked and bids submitted, Carrick’s window is entering its decisive phase. The club’s ability to finalise deals will shape United’s competitiveness in the Premier League, while the exits of academy prospects and Kambwala highlight the broader challenges of squad management. The next 48 hours will determine whether Carrick can deliver the squad he envisions—a blend of youthful energy, tactical flexibility, and financial prudence.
