Man Utd news: Myles Lewis-Skelly transfer bombshell as club puts three players up for sale

Manchester United’s transfer business under Michael Carrick has taken another turn this week, with reports suggesting Arsenal have offered 19-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly to both United and Chelsea. The Gunners’ willingness to let the versatile teenager leave comes as Mikel Arteta looks to finalise his left-back options, creating a potential opportunity for Old Trafford to address a defensive weakness.

Why Lewis-Skelly’s availability changes United’s left-back hunt

United have spent three pre-season matches unbeaten but remain unsettled at left-back after Luke Shaw’s departure. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall has been the primary target, yet Sky sources suggest the Magpies are unwilling to sell. That stalemate now paves the way for Lewis-Skelly, who has spent the past season playing in midfield for Arsenal but retains the versatility to deputise at left-back. His inclusion in United’s summer targets follows Bruno Guimarães’ £75m arrival, a deal that has prompted further adjustments at the Emirates.

Arteta’s decision to offer Lewis-Skelly reflects a broader reshuffle at the Emirates. The Gunners have already recouped around £40m from exits including Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior, while Piero Hincapié’s permanent signing and Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival have reduced the teenager’s first-team opportunities. Arsenal’s pre-season defeat to Borussia Dortmund and upcoming Community Shield clash with Manchester City underscore the urgency to balance incomings and outgoings before the transfer window closes.

Three United players now on the market amid wider squad overhaul

Lewis-Skelly’s potential move is part of a wider sell-to-buy strategy at United. Carrick’s side have already added midfield reinforcements in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but the club’s willingness to part with three players signals a more aggressive approach to squad restructuring. The identities of those three have not been disclosed, though the move aligns with United’s need to recoup funds after a financially constrained campaign.

This shift contrasts with Arsenal’s own transfer activity, where Gabriel Jesus remains a potential exit target. Reports suggest Napoli’s Romelu Lukaku deal with Fenerbahçe could free up around £5.12m, with Arsenal valuing Jesus at £20m. The Brazilian’s potential sale would further reshape Arteta’s attacking options, particularly as new signing Bruno Guimarães prepares for his first competitive appearance in an Arsenal shirt.

The tactical fit: Lewis-Skelly’s role in United’s midfield-to-defence pivot

Lewis-Skelly’s development under Arteta has centred on midfield, where he contributed during Arsenal’s title-winning run and Champions League final. His technical ability and progressive passing could allow United to transition him into a left-back role, providing cover for Diogo Dalot or Tyrell Malacia. The Gunners’ reported preference for Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Piero Hincapié at full-back suggests Lewis-Skelly’s future lies elsewhere, making him a pragmatic fit for United’s needs.

Chelsea’s involvement complicates matters, with the Blues also receiving Lewis-Skelly’s proposal this week. However, United’s stronger positional alignment—particularly with Shaw’s exit—gives them a clearer incentive to pursue the teenager. Carrick’s side will need to move quickly if they are to secure Lewis-Skelly before Chelsea or another rival steps in.

Beyond Lewis-Skelly, United’s transfer activity this summer has been defined by targeted upgrades rather than wholesale changes. The addition of Guimarães and the potential arrival of Lewis-Skelly would address two key areas, but the club’s willingness to sell three players underscores the financial realities of rebuilding under new ownership. With pre-season form promising but not definitive, Carrick’s window to strengthen the squad remains open—but the clock is ticking.

For Arsenal, the Lewis-Skelly situation reflects a squad in flux, where Arteta’s title-winning core is being reshaped to accommodate new signings and financial constraints. The Gunners’ summer has already seen departures totaling £40m, with Jesus’ potential sale another piece in the jigsaw. Meanwhile, United’s pursuit of Lewis-Skelly could mark the first domino in a transfer chain that reshapes both clubs’ defensive and midfield dynamics ahead of a pivotal season.
