Man Utd news: Myles Lewis-Skelly transfer boost as club close in on £60m deal

Manchester United are close to agreeing a £60m deal for Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, with Michael Carrick’s side locked in advanced talks over the 19-year-old’s future. The Gunners, meanwhile, have made their stance clear on Ethan Nwaneri, prioritising loan offers for the teenager as they weigh up their options before deadline day.

United’s left-back hunt intensifies

United have been tracking Lewis-Skelly for months, viewing him as a long-term solution at left-back or in midfield. Arsenal’s CEO Richard Garlick discussed the teenager’s future, telling reporters: “There’s been a lot of speculation around players. I can’t stop other clubs being interested.” Garlick added that while Arsenal are “not actively looking at selling” homegrown talents, they would consider a “right opportunity” if it benefits both the player and the club. With Carrick’s side already bolstering their midfield with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, Lewis-Skelly would slot into a clear positional need.

The pursuit comes as United also reignite their interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, submitting a fresh bid for the Cameroon international. The club’s focus on midfield reinforcements has been evident all summer, but Lewis-Skelly’s versatility—capable of playing at left-back or in central midfield—makes him a particularly attractive option. Arsenal’s willingness to entertain offers suggests they are prepared to cash in on young talent to fund further squad strengthening.

Arsenal’s delicate balancing act

Arsenal, meanwhile, are navigating a delicate transfer strategy. After a slow start to the window, they have since added Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, but their pursuit of Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa remains a priority. The Gunners are also open to offers for Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and Fabio Vieira, while Hale End graduates Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly are firmly on the market.

Nwaneri’s future has been a major talking point, with reports suggesting Arsenal are prioritising temporary moves for the 19-year-old rather than a permanent exit. BBC Sport noted that the club understands his limited game time this season due to a stacked midfield, and are therefore focusing on securing a loan deal. Arteta’s stance was clear last week: “I want him to be at the club, but we have to be realistic.” The Gunners’ approach reflects their cautious approach to youth development, even as pressure mounts to balance ambition with financial prudence.

Deadline day showdown

The next 48 hours will be pivotal for both clubs. United’s pursuit of Lewis-Skelly and Baleba could define their midfield for years, while Arsenal’s decision on Nwaneri and Konsa will shape their title defence. The Gunners’ recent Community Shield win over Manchester City has eased some early-season concerns, but their squad depth remains a question mark.

For United, a double swoop on Lewis-Skelly and Baleba would represent a bold statement of intent under Carrick, who is still assembling his first-choice XI. The club’s midfield rebuild has been a key theme this summer, with Tielemans and Santos joining earlier this month. Adding Lewis-Skelly would provide further flexibility, while Baleba’s physicality and technical ability could offer an upgrade in the engine room.

Arsenal, meanwhile, face a balancing act between selling young talent and maintaining squad harmony. Their willingness to consider offers for Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly suggests they are prepared to make tough decisions to fund their ambitions. The Konsa deal, if completed, would address a defensive need, while the potential sales of Jesus or Martinelli could free up funds for further reinforcements.

As the window hurtles towards its close, both clubs are operating in a high-stakes environment. United’s pursuit of Lewis-Skelly is a clear sign of their intent to compete at the highest level, while Arsenal’s cautious approach reflects their desire to balance ambition with financial sustainability. The next few days could reshape both clubs’ futures.

One thing is certain: the coming hours will bring more twists before the Premier League’s transfer window slams shut. For United, the question is whether they can land both Lewis-Skelly and Baleba. For Arsenal, the answer may lie in how much they are willing to sacrifice to keep their title hopes alive.
