Manchester United’s midfield rebuild leaves Carrick with no excuses

Erik ten Hag’s summer overhaul has left Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s successor with a squad that no longer resembles the one he inherited. The latest evidence arrived on Friday, when Manchester United confirmed the medical for Jean-Clair Todibo, a centre-back whose arrival underscores a clear hierarchy: defensive solidity now takes priority over midfield experimentation. The message to the club’s midfielders is unambiguous—perform or find a way out.

What has changed under Ten Hag

Since taking charge, Ten Hag has overseen a targeted rebuild that has already seen the exits of Scott McTominay, Fred and Casemiro, three players whose combined presence once defined United’s midfield identity. Their departures were not coincidental; they followed a pattern of attrition that began under Ralf Rangnick and accelerated under Solskjær. The club’s recruitment strategy now favours athleticism and progressive passing, traits embodied by players such as Manuel Ugarte, whose arrival from PSG in January signalled a shift in tactical direction.

Ten Hag’s insistence on a high-pressing system demands midfielders who can cover ground, recycle possession and press aggressively. The squad now includes players like Kobbie Mainoo, who has emerged as a key figure in midfield, and Amad Diallo, whose versatility allows him to operate in deeper roles. The net effect is a squad that no longer accommodates luxury options—every player must justify their place in a system that prioritises intensity and cohesion.

Why Carrick faces a defining moment

Michael Carrick’s interim tenure offered a brief respite from the chaos that preceded him, but his caretaker spell also highlighted the limitations of a squad built on short-term fixes. United’s midfield during his time in charge was a patchwork of stopgaps, a reality that Ten Hag has moved swiftly to address. The Dutchman’s preference for a double pivot—often featuring Ugarte alongside Mainoo or Amad—leaves little room for players who do not meet the physical and technical demands of the role.

Carrick’s challenge is not just tactical but existential. The club’s recruitment over the past two windows suggests that Ten Hag is building a midfield for the next cycle, not the current one. With Ugarte’s arrival and the potential signing of Jean-Clair Todibo, the message is clear: the midfield is no longer a holding area for players on the fringes of the squad. Carrick’s ability to integrate young talent like Mainoo will determine whether he can transition from interim manager to permanent leader.

Ten Hag’s approach has drawn comparisons to Pep Guardiola’s early days at Manchester City, where a ruthless clear-out of underperforming players paved the way for a new era. The difference, of course, is that United’s rebuild is still in its infancy. The club’s recent struggles in midfield—most notably in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool last season—have exposed the gulf between ambition and execution. Ten Hag’s task is to ensure that the next generation of midfielders does not inherit the same problems.

What comes next for United

The next phase of United’s rebuild will be defined by two factors: the integration of new signings and the development of homegrown talent. The club’s recent links with former Hearts manager Eva Olid suggest a willingness to explore alternative coaching structures, though Ten Hag’s long-term future remains secure for now. The midfield, however, is where the most immediate pressure lies.

Ten Hag’s system demands midfielders who can dictate tempo, press aggressively and cover defensively. The arrival of Ugarte—a player whose ball-winning and progressive passing align perfectly with Ten Hag’s philosophy—has already shifted the balance. Mainoo’s emergence as a first-team regular is another positive, but the club’s midfield depth remains thin. The potential signing of Jean-Clair Todibo, a defender, further reinforces the idea that Ten Hag is prioritising defensive solidity before addressing midfield gaps.

For Carrick, the path forward is clear. He must either adapt to Ten Hag’s system or make way for a coach who can. The club’s recruitment suggests that the latter option is becoming increasingly likely. United’s midfield rebuild is no longer a work in progress—it is a fait accompli, and Carrick’s role in shaping it will define his future at the club.

Ten Hag’s project is still in its early stages, but the direction is unmistakable. United are no longer a club that clings to familiar faces or recycled solutions. The midfield rebuild is a statement of intent, and Carrick’s ability to navigate it will determine whether he remains part of the journey.

For now, the message is simple: the excuses are over. The rebuild has begun, and the midfield is the first line of attack.
