Marc Skinner’s five-year tenure at Manchester United Women ended this week. We examine the highs, lows, and reasons behind his departure after a landmark spell.
Marc Skinner’s five-year spell as Manchester United Women’s head coach ended on Monday, a week before the club’s opening Women’s Super League fixture. The timing—just as pre-season optimism should peak—underscored the abruptness of his departure. United’s statement credited Skinner with “significant contribution” and praised his professionalism, but the exit follows a season in which fourth place in the WSL meant missing out on European football for the first time under his watch. That failure to qualify for the Champions League, after consecutive FA Cup finals and a League Cup final last term, exposed the limits of his project.
Skinner’s legacy is secure in one respect: he delivered United’s first major trophy, the 2024 FA Cup, ending a barren run that stretched back to the club’s formation in 2018. Three FA Cup finals in a row—two defeats, one victory—marked a clear upward curve. The 2023 WSL runners-up finish, United’s highest league placing, reinforced the sense that Skinner had transformed a side once adrift at the bottom of the pyramid into genuine contenders. Yet the 2025-26 season exposed a plateau. Fourth place, 13 points behind third, was not the step forward the club had anticipated after the summer’s contract renewal.
The contradiction at the heart of Skinner’s departure is that he signed a new two-year deal last summer, just months before United’s form dipped. The club’s statement made no mention of performance in the decision, but the timing of his exit—before a ball was kicked—suggests a mutual reappraisal. United’s opening WSL fixtures—a run that includes London City Lionesses, Chelsea, and Arsenal—will now be managed by an interim staff, raising immediate questions about continuity in a squad that has grown accustomed to Skinner’s methods.
Skinner’s United also reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season, a first for the club in the competition, and contested the League Cup final. Those runs proved United could compete with Europe’s elite, but the WSL remains the proving ground. Fourth place, without the cushion of European football, is a step backward in a league where Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City have tightened their grip. The club’s statement framed Skinner’s exit as gratitude for his “commitment and dedication,” but the absence of European football for the first time under his tenure speaks to a project that stalled.
United’s tricky start to the season—three of the first four fixtures against sides who finished above them last term—will test whoever takes over. The opening weekend at London City Lionesses, followed by home and away trips to Chelsea and Arsenal, is a baptism by fire for an interim setup. Skinner leaves behind a squad that has matured under his guidance, but the lack of a clear pathway to the top three demands fresh impetus.
His departure arrives amid wider flux at Old Trafford, where first-team manager Erik ten Hag’s future is also under scrutiny. The women’s side has long been insulated from some of the first team’s turbulence, but the club’s broader direction will shape the next chapter. Whether United can build on Skinner’s foundations—or whether a new voice is required to push through the final barrier—will define the coming months.
Skinner’s United were built on structure and set-piece threat, with a clear identity in transition. The 2023 runners-up season was powered by compact defending and direct counter-attacks, but last term’s drop-off suggested opponents had found solutions. The Champions League quarter-final exit, despite a spirited display, hinted at tactical rigidity when facing elite pressing systems. United’s inability to break down deep blocks in key moments became a recurring theme, and the lack of a reliable creative outlet in midfield—beyond familiar names—limited their ceiling.
The FA Cup triumph in 2024 masked those issues temporarily, but the League Cup final defeat last season exposed frailties in big games. Skinner’s man-management was rarely questioned, yet the squad’s mental resilience in tight contests appeared to waver. The club’s decision to part ways now, rather than wait for a clearer run of form, suggests a belief that a fresh approach is needed to bridge the gap to the top two.
United’s next appointment will be scrutinised closely. The club’s statement offered no clues about the timeline, but the interim period risks unsettling a dressing room that has grown comfortable under Skinner. The question now is whether United double down on their existing model—perhaps with an internal promotion—or bring in an outsider with a different philosophy.
Skinner’s United leaves a complicated legacy: progress, but not enough. The FA Cup breakthrough was real, but the WSL’s top three remain out of reach. With a daunting start to the season, the club faces a choice between continuity and a sharp reset. The next few weeks will determine whether Skinner’s exit is the end of an era—or the beginning of a necessary overhaul.
