McInnes backing himself to bring success to Rangers

Derek McInnes arrived at Ibrox with a reputation for steadying troubled ships, but the opening weeks of his Rangers tenure have tested even his resolve. A Conference League play-off exit to Jablonec on penalties means the Light Blues will not compete in European competition for the first time since 2017, while a five-point Premiership deficit to Celtic after two matches has already framed the season as a fight for relevance rather than dominance. Yet in a week where pressure has mounted, McInnes has chosen to double down rather than retreat, declaring simply: “I am a good manager, I back myself.”

From Europe to domestic urgency

The play-off defeat to Jablonec was not just a missed chance for European football—it was a missed chance for momentum. Rangers dominated possession in Prague, registering 63% in the first leg and 59% in the second, but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal, mustering just two shots on target across both matches. When the tie went to penalties, their composure deserted them: Jablonec converted all five of their spot-kicks, while Rangers missed two—first from James Tavernier, whose effort was saved by Ondřej Kolář, and then from Cyriel Dessers, whose strike was pushed onto the post by the same goalkeeper. The financial and prestige hit is real: European nights at Ibrox generate more than gate receipts; they fuel belief across the club, with UEFA coefficient points at stake and commercial exposure in key markets like Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Now, with domestic form lagging behind their arch-rivals—Celtic’s 2-0 win over St Mirren and 3-1 victory over Hearts leaving them with a maximum six points—urgency is twofold. McInnes knows the supporters’ patience is finite, but his message is clear: the path forward runs through the Premiership, not the continent.

Sunday’s trip to Pittodrie offers a chance to reset. Rangers have not enjoyed a strong record at Aberdeen in recent years, losing three of their last five visits and failing to score in two of those defeats, including a 2-0 reverse in December 2025. A win would not only close the gap on Celtic but send a signal that McInnes’ side can still impose themselves in the title race. The manager’s tone suggests he sees this as a turning point, not a surrender. “We’ve not got the best record recently at Pittodrie,” he admitted, “so we have to be ready for that one.” The stakes are high, and the manager is gambling on his own conviction.

Ownership and accountability

McInnes’ public backing of himself is not bravado—it’s a calculated response to a moment that could define his tenure. He is not the first Rangers manager to face a rocky start, but he is one of the few willing to frame it as a shared responsibility rather than a personal failing. “At the minute, none of us are doing our job well enough,” he said, shifting focus from individual blame to collective effort. It’s a rare admission of systemic strain, delivered with the weight of a man who believes he knows how to fix it. His call for supporters to “buy into and get behind” the team is more than a motivational soundbite; it reflects a deeper understanding of Rangers’ recent struggles, where a 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock in the league opener and a 2-1 loss to Hearts in the League Cup have left fans questioning whether the club’s recent struggles are tactical, structural, or simply a run of bad luck.

McInnes’ insistence that he “still believe[s] we’re going to be a success here” is an attempt to bridge that divide before it widens further. Whether it works may depend less on his words and more on the results that follow. The manager’s track record—promoting youth at Aberdeen, stabilising St Johnstone, and overseeing a Scottish Cup win at Kilmarnock—offers a counterpoint to the current turbulence, but the Ibrox environment demands immediate validation. His willingness to take ownership is a start; now he must translate it into a plan that works on the pitch.

Tactical reset or identity crisis?

Rangers’ European exit exposed familiar frailties: profligacy in front of goal and a lack of killer instinct in big moments. The play-off tie was decided by missed chances and penalty shootout nerves, not tactical sophistication. Domestically, the side has looked disjointed, struggling to impose their rhythm against teams they should dominate—most notably in the 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock, where they registered just six shots and failed to register a single attempt on target. McInnes’ challenge is to impose his own identity—one that blends the physicality of his Aberdeen days with the technical demands of modern Scottish football. So far, the blend has not taken. His system at Aberdeen relied on rapid transitions and direct pressing, but at Rangers, the personnel—particularly in midfield—have struggled to replicate that intensity. The absence of Scott Arfield, whose leadership and technical quality were pivotal in McInnes’ earlier successes, has been keenly felt.

The manager’s pragmatism suggests he will prioritise structure over spectacle in the short term. If Rangers are to close the gap on Celtic, they will need to grind out results rather than rely on moments of individual brilliance. That means tighter pressing—Rangers’ average defensive line in the first two league games was 42 metres from their own goal, higher than Celtic’s 38 metres—sharper transitions, and a ruthless approach to converting chances. The personnel may be capable—Dessers’ movement and Tavernier’s crossing are still potent weapons—but the system must deliver. McInnes’ willingness to take responsibility is a start; now he must translate it into a plan that works on the pitch.

For a club that has oscillated between ambition and underachievement in recent years—from the Gerrard era’s near-misses to the post-Ceferin restructuring under van Bronckhorst—McInnes’ stance is either a bold gamble or a necessary act of defiance. The next fortnight will reveal which. A win at Pittodrie would buy him time and restore some faith. A defeat would intensify the scrutiny. Either way, his message is clear: he is not running. The question is whether the club’s hierarchy, the players, or the fans will follow.
