Michael Carrick delivers Mason Mount injury update after cruel blow vs PSG

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United began their pre-season with a competitive draw against Paris Saint-Germain, but the evening was overshadowed by an injury scare involving Mason Mount. The England midfielder lasted just 18 minutes in Gothenburg before being withdrawn, raising immediate concerns over a potential setback for United’s reshaped squad. Carrick moved quickly to calm fears, insisting the decision was precautionary, yet the episode underlines the fragility of a player whose United career has been repeatedly interrupted by physical issues.

What happened in Gothenburg — and why it matters now

Mount was introduced at the start of the friendly at Ullevi Stadium but was forced off before the half-hour mark. Video footage showed him walking unaided toward the tunnel, easing fears of anything more serious than a knock. Carrick later told reporters: “He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”

The incident arrives at a pivotal moment for United. Mount’s arrival from Chelsea in 2023 for £55 million has yielded only 25 Premier League starts, and his latest setback risks derailing a season already reshaped by the departures of Casemiro and the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. With Champions League football back in the calendar, every fit body matters.

United’s pre-season progress — and the road ahead

Despite the scare, United’s performance offered reasons for optimism. Bryan Mbeumo equalised after 32 minutes, his third goal in two games, while Ibrahim Mbaye’s early strike for PSG exposed defensive lapses United cannot afford in August. Carrick’s side now face Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday before a clash with AC Milan three days later. The Premier League curtain-raiser at newly promoted Hull City on 22 August looms large.

Carrick has already reshaped the engine room, adding Tielemans and Santos to plug the void left by Casemiro’s free-agent exit. Tielemans’ cameo against PSG hinted at the Belgian’s ability to dictate tempo, while Santos’ industry offers depth. Yet the Mount question remains: can he stay on the pitch long enough to justify his price tag?

Injury history casts a shadow over Mount’s United future

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Mount has managed only 54 Premier League appearances from a possible 114. His latest scare is the latest in a litany of setbacks that have blunted his impact. Carrick’s caution is understandable, but United cannot afford another season of interrupted progress. The club’s transfer business this summer has been shrewd, yet squad continuity is just as vital.

With two pre-season fixtures remaining, Carrick must tread carefully. Mount’s rehabilitation will be scrutinised, and his availability for the Premier League opener against Hull will be the first real test. United’s title ambitions may still be a work in progress, but their ability to navigate a congested schedule without further injuries could decide their trajectory.

Mount’s premature exit in Gothenburg was a timely reminder that pre-season fitness is no guarantee of durability. Carrick’s measured response suggests United are not yet panicking, but the episode reinforces the need for caution. As the club chases Champions League football and domestic respectability, every minute of every player’s fitness will count.
