Michael Carrick’s dream Marcus Rashford replacement as Man Utd sign £60million star

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United are reshaping their squad with a clear vision: replacing Marcus Rashford without falling into the trap of chasing a direct clone. The 28-year-old’s future remains unsettled after loan stints at Aston Villa and Barcelona, where the Catalan club opted for Anthony Gordon instead of activating a £26m permanent clause. Now, with Rashford’s representatives in talks with Fenerbahçe over a potential move to the Super Lig, Carrick is preparing for life without his boyhood club’s record scorer. His solution? A £60m left-back who could redefine United’s left flank.

Rashford’s exit clears the path for radical change

Rashford’s potential departure to Fenerbahçe—where he is one of three players on the club’s shortlist alongside Rafael Leão and Ismaila Sarr—would leave a void on United’s left wing. But Carrick has already demonstrated a willingness to think differently. Last season, Patrick Dorgu’s versatility saw him deployed as a left-midfielder and left-winger, amassing four goals and four assists in 25/26. With Matheus Cunha inheriting Rashford’s No. 10 shirt, Dorgu’s role may shift to a supporting act, freeing up Carrick to address the defensive side of the pitch.

That leaves Luke Shaw as United’s only established left-back, a position Carrick appears determined to reinforce. Enter Lewis Hall, the 21-year-old Newcastle defender who has emerged as United’s top target. Reports suggest an initial bid of around £60m could land the England international, who has been earmarked as Shaw’s long-term successor. His arrival would mark the fourth major defensive signing of the summer, following Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in midfield and Karl Darlow as backup goalkeeper.

United’s transfer chessboard takes shape

Carrick’s summer has been defined by calculated moves rather than scattergun spending. Tielemans and Santos arrived to bolster a midfield in flux, while Darlow’s arrival underlined a pragmatic approach to squad depth. Yet the most intriguing piece of the puzzle remains Hall, whose potential departure from Newcastle would signal Carrick’s intent to rebuild from the back. The club’s interest in Hall predates Rashford’s uncertain future, but his availability now aligns with a broader strategy to address multiple positions.

United’s pursuit of Hall is not happening in isolation. Reports link them with Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí, while their interest in Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae has reportedly stalled. The South Korean defender, competing for minutes behind Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt, has made his stance clear: “I am competing as the third defender… I think I will stay put.” His decision to fight for his place at Bayern contrasts with Hall’s apparent eagerness for a move, making him a more realistic target for Carrick.

Women’s team overhaul continues under Carrick

Carrick’s rebuild extends beyond the men’s first team. Former Hearts boss Eva Olid is set to be appointed as the new women’s manager, replacing Marc Skinner. The move reflects United’s ambition to elevate their women’s side, mirroring the overhaul in the men’s squad. Olid’s arrival could signal a fresh tactical approach, though her integration will depend on the club’s broader vision for the women’s team.

United’s pre-season campaign has provided a glimpse of Carrick’s philosophy in action. A recent friendly against Atlético Madrid offered early indications of his preferred system, though the match itself was overshadowed by tactical experimentation rather than standout performances. The game served as a reminder that Carrick’s project is still in its formative stages, with more signings likely before the window slams shut.

What comes next: a left-back as the Rashford paradox

Carrick’s approach to replacing Rashford is unconventional but deliberate. By targeting Hall, he is not seeking a like-for-like replacement but a player who can redefine the role. Hall’s ability to play as a left-sided centre-back or wing-back in a back three could offer United tactical flexibility, particularly if Shaw’s long-term future is uncertain. The £60m fee, while substantial, reflects the premium on young, versatile defenders in modern football.

Rashford’s potential exit to Fenerbahçe would accelerate this transition. The Turkish club’s interest in the England international, alongside Leão and Sarr, suggests a high-profile move is plausible. If completed, Carrick would inherit the task of reshaping United’s attack without relying on a single star. His willingness to gamble on Hall—despite the positional shift—demonstrates a confidence in his own project.

The coming weeks will determine whether Carrick’s gamble pays off. Hall’s arrival would signal a bold statement of intent, while Rashford’s departure would force United to adapt quickly. Either way, Carrick’s summer has been defined by a refusal to follow convention. United are edging closer to securing Hall, and if the deal materialises, it could be the first of several moves that redefine the club’s identity under his leadership.

For now, the Rashford saga remains unresolved, but Carrick’s next move is already in motion. The question is whether a left-back can truly replace a left-winger—and whether United’s fans will embrace the experiment.
