Morocco FA chief Lekjaa tipped for PM role amid football rise

Morocco’s football federation president Fouzi Lekjaa is at the centre of a political storm that could reshape both the country’s government and its football ambitions. Speculation linking the 52-year-old administrator to the role of prime minister has intensified in Rabat, where observers see his profile as a unifying figure capable of steering Morocco through a period of rapid social and economic change. The whispers follow a decade in which Lekjaa has overseen the Atlas Lions’ transformation from regional underdogs to a World Cup quarter-finalist and a model for African football governance.

From federation corridors to government corridors

Lekjaa’s rise in Moroccan football began in 2014 when he took charge of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. Under his watch, the Atlas Lions claimed their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage win in 2022, beating Spain and Portugal before falling to France in the quarter-finals. That run, broadcast to 1.5 billion viewers, burnished Morocco’s reputation as a football power capable of punching above its weight on the global stage. Domestically, Lekjaa has pushed for stadium modernisation, youth academies and expanded professional leagues—measures that have coincided with Morocco’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. Political analysts now argue that his blend of sporting credibility and administrative experience makes him a credible candidate to lead a government tasked with delivering economic reforms and social cohesion.

A football-first blueprint for government

If Lekjaa were to become prime minister, his agenda would likely prioritise infrastructure and youth development as engines of growth. Morocco’s football-led regeneration is already visible in cities like Agadir, where the newly built Adrar Stadium has become a civic landmark, and in Tangier, where a high-performance centre is training the next generation of coaches. Lekjaa has repeatedly framed football as a tool for national unity and soft power, pointing to the 2022 World Cup as proof that Moroccan identity can transcend borders. He has argued that football serves as a unifying force in Morocco, connecting people across regions and generations. A government led by Lekjaa could therefore embed sporting ambition into broader policy, linking stadiums to schools and export markets to academy curricula.

Global football’s shifting centre of gravity

Morocco’s football ascent is part of a wider shift in the game’s centre of gravity toward Africa and the Middle East. The country’s 2030 World Cup bid, shared with Spain and Portugal, is built on the same infrastructure and youth-development pillars that Lekjaa has championed. His potential move to the prime minister’s office would send a signal to FIFA and UEFA that Morocco is serious about hosting the world’s biggest sporting event while using football as a lever for wider social progress. The timing is critical: with the 2026 World Cup already triggering unrest in London after France’s victory over Morocco, Lekjaa’s political profile could help mediate tensions and reinforce Morocco’s role as a stabilising force in global football politics.World Cup 2026: ‘violent disorder’ in London after France’s win over Morocco, Spain v Belgium buildup – live

Lekjaa’s potential political career also intersects with Morocco’s talent pipeline. European clubs are increasingly scouting Moroccan academies, with Manchester City monitoring 17-year-old midfielder Oussama Bouaddi.Man City interested in Morocco wonderkid Bouaddi The federation’s ability to negotiate transfer fees and reinvest proceeds into grassroots programmes would be central to any future government’s economic strategy, turning football into a revenue stream rather than a cost centre.

Yet the road to the prime minister’s office is far from guaranteed. Morocco’s political landscape remains dominated by long-standing parties and palace-aligned technocrats, and Lekjaa’s football background could be seen as a liability by traditionalists. His detractors point to the Atlas Lions’ recent struggles in AFCON qualifiers as evidence that the federation still has work to do before it can claim to have delivered on all its promises. Still, the narrative of a football administrator ascending to the highest political office is a potent one in a country where the national team’s success has become a source of collective pride.

What is clear is that Lekjaa’s potential move would blur the lines between sport and statecraft in ways rarely seen in modern football. If he does make the jump, the first test will be whether he can translate the energy of a World Cup quarter-final into the grind of day-to-day governance. For Morocco’s football community, the hope is that his elevation would accelerate the very projects—stadiums, academies, leagues—that have already redefined the Atlas Lions’ place in the game. For the rest of the world, it would be a reminder that football’s influence now stretches far beyond the pitch.
