Nev: Wirtz and Isak Liverpool’s biggest disappointments – they must improve

Liverpool’s opening-day stalemate at Newcastle laid bare the gulf between promise and performance for two of their marquee signings. Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, whose combined transfer fees have already exceeded £200 million, were singled out by Gary Neville as the club’s “biggest disappointments” after a first weekend in which neither delivered the decisive impact expected of such investment. The verdict from the former Manchester United defender, delivered on his podcast, was blunt: “We’ve been kind to them,” he said. “They’re going to have to start playing sooner or later.” Neville’s assessment was not isolated: both players arrived at Anfield with reputations as game-changers, yet their £200m+ price tag demands immediate returns rather than the grace period typically afforded to new signings.

Where the £200m gamble fell short

Isak completed the full 90 minutes on his first return to St James’ Park since his world-record Premier League arrival last summer, yet offered little of the menace that once made him a Geordie fan favourite. Wirtz, substituted just after the 60th minute for Alexis Mac Allister, looked similarly adrift, his trademark creativity conspicuous only by its absence. Both had flashed in pre-season friendlies under new manager Andoni Iraola, but the Premier League’s intensity exposed their lack of Premier League-specific conditioning and tactical clarity. Isak managed just two shots on target, while Wirtz completed only 73% of his passes—a figure that underscored his disconnect from the game’s tempo.

Their struggles were not isolated. Liverpool laboured to a 2-2 draw in a match that saw Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty cancel out Newcastle’s two-goal lead, a sequence that underscored the Reds’ reliance on individual moments rather than collective rhythm. Iraola, speaking ahead of the game, had acknowledged the hostility Isak would face, but the striker’s performance suggested deeper issues: a player still adapting to the physicality and tempo of his new league. “He knew it would be tough,” Iraola said, “but the Premier League doesn’t care about reputation.”

Why the criticism stings now

This is not merely post-match hyperbole. The window for excuses has closed. Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has been muted compared to rivals, with Bradley Barcola talks stalling over PSG’s £140 million valuation—a figure that reflects the inflated expectations now placed on every signing. The club’s hierarchy, having sanctioned the Isak and Wirtz deals, must see tangible returns before the January window becomes a scramble for replacements. Neville’s intervention sharpens the focus on two players who arrived with reputations as game-changers. Wirtz, once the Bundesliga’s brightest midfield orchestrator at Bayer Leverkusen, has looked bereft of his usual tenacity, while Isak’s finishing and movement have failed to match the standards set at Real Sociedad.

Neville’s broader critique cut deeper: “I don’t see the tenacity in Wirtz in particular. I just see a nice player moving around the pitch, not really ever looking like he’s busting a gut to do anything.” The assessment was damning, but it was grounded in tangible metrics. Wirtz’s pressing intensity, a hallmark of his Leverkusen career, was absent, while Isak’s movement in the box lacked the sharpness that made him a goal threat at Newcastle. Their underwhelming display at Newcastle—where Isak completed only 68% of his duels and Wirtz was dispossessed four times—was symptomatic of a broader malaise: Liverpool’s attack lacks the cutting edge required to sustain title challenges.

The path to redemption

Iraola’s Liverpool are still finding their feet, but the evidence from Tyneside suggests the front two must rediscover the form that convinced Liverpool to part with such sums. For Wirtz, that means rediscovering the pressing intensity that made him Leverkusen’s engine; for Isak, it demands sharper movement in the box and composure under pressure. The Premier League will not wait for sentiment. “If you’re going to be nice,” Neville warned, “you’d better be incredible at football.”

Neville, though, retains faith. “I’ve watched them both for 12 months,” he said, “and I believe in their quality.” Yet belief alone will not win matches. Liverpool’s next fixtures—against Brighton and Burnley—offer a chance to reset, but the clock is ticking. If Wirtz and Isak fail to ignite, the scrutiny will escalate, and the club’s patience may wear thin. The evidence from Newcastle suggests they cannot afford another false start.

For now, Liverpool’s transfer focus remains on Barcola, though PSG’s valuation has so far proved a bridge too far. The Gunners, meanwhile, have moved decisively for Ezri Konsa, while Julian Alvarez’s future hangs in the balance—a reminder that the market does not stand still. Liverpool cannot afford to either.

Isak and Wirtz must improve. The question is whether they can—and whether Liverpool can afford to wait.
